Job Title: Histotechnologist Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Histotechnologist Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Certification in Histotechnology Certifications: ASCP or equivalent Must-Have: Certification as a histotechnologist Description: 8 hour day shift Monday-Friday. Under the direction of supervisors, responsible for the prompt, efficient, and accurate performance of a variety of histological procedures on tissue specimens. Responsible for the identification and processing of all tissue specimens received in anatomic pathology. Assigns an appropriate sequential accession number to each tissue specimen while maintaining absolute certainty of patient identification throughout processing and handling procedures. Accurately enters all patient demographic information, specimen source, and physician and/or surgeon details for each specimen received. Assists the pathologist with the gross examination of all tissue specimens by providing accurately labeled tissue cassettes for examination. Loads and operates the tissue processor, providing any assistance required by the pathologist. Meticulously processes and cuts sections from embedded tissue blocks, stains, and delivers prepared slides to the pathologist in a timely manner for daily microscopic examination. Assists the pathologist with frozen section preparation immediately after specimens are received. Performs special histochemical staining procedures as required by the pathologist within the requested timeframe for timely diagnostic reporting. Prepares slides or anatomical material for sending to other laboratories for consultation or processing as deemed necessary by the pathologist. Files properly indexed tissue slides and blocks for storage and ensures efficient retrieval. Assures that slides are retained for the proper length of time before discarding. Assists with the rotation of all patient specimens located in storage sites as needed. Holiday coverage required.
