Job Title: Psychiatric Attendant Profession: Medical Specialty: Mental Health Duration: At least 1 Year Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: 1 year preferred License: Not specified Certifications: CPR certification required Must-Have: Healthcare-professional level CPR certification Description: Provides on-ward security functions over forensic patients or residents of secure-care areas in a mental health institution. Responsible for providing surveillance regarding safety and security. Escorts patients to and from activities or appointments such as meals and recreational activities. Investigates patient misbehavior. Observes and monitors patient behavior during meals. Intervenes during crisis situations to prevent self-injury or injury to others. Monitors patients in seclusion. Searches patient clothing, individual rooms, and ward living areas for dangerous objects or contraband. Prevents patient escapes. Provides direct care, treatment, and programs to patients. Promotes activities through participation, interaction, or involvement with patients. Attends to personal hygiene and grooming needs of patients. Encourages independent functioning in daily living activities. Conducts one-to-one sessions with patients to discuss problems or concerns. Assists in managing treatments directed by nursing staff. Prepares reports and documentation regarding patient and unit activities. Attends in-service training programs and participates in interdisciplinary team meetings. Responds to patient needs in emergency situations. Knowledge of agency and hospital policies related to forensic patient care and custodial care is essential. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action. Minimum educational qualifications include formal education in arithmetic, reading, and writing common English vocabulary. Unusual working conditions may include exposure to unpredictable patient behavior and communicable diseases.
