This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I position in the Ashe County (Warrensville) Bridge Maintenance Unit. The Transportation Supervisor I will supervise the activities of a bridge crew in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation and replacement of bridges, pipes, and culverts, determining and scheduling daily work including needed labor, equipment and materials to accomplish crew activities. Activities include maintenance, repair and replacement of timber, concrete and steel components (such as railings, decks, superstructure, substructure, joints, trusses), cleaning and painting steel and masonry walls; complete replacement of bridges and large diameter pipes, prepares reports and forms. Position supervises daily tasks, reading and interpreting construction/repair plans; monitoring and review of daily work assignments, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, documenting material inventory and equipment usage. Position is responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. This position must be able to maintain a close work environment or work independently as needed. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. The selected applicant will be subject to working during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency. . Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to climb, bend, traverse and work on uneven surfaces and slopes. These positions are also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.







Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies





+ Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as bridge maintenance equipment operation.


+ Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.


+ Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew.


+ Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.


+ Experience inspecting bridge for minor maintenance needs.






Additional Expectations


Safety shoes required. Ability to supervise work crews and promote safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures and understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Perform record keeping manually and electronically. Selected applicant will be working in roadway or on the shoulder adjacent to the traveling public in heavy traffic while working safely and following instructions to complete tasks. Must not be afraid of heights. Must be able to operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Must be able to follow instructions to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Must be able to use tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities.


The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.


Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.




Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
