Job Description: Telehandler Operator

Location: Tinian Island, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, United States

The telehandler operator, also known as a telescopic handler operator or zoom boom operator, is a skilled professional responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a specialized piece of construction equipment called a telehandler. This machine combines features of a forklift with a crane, offering versatility in lifting, transporting, and placing heavy materials on construction sites and other industrial settings.

Responsibilities:
  • Operate a telehandler to perform various tasks, such as:
  • Lifting and placing building materials (bricks, lumber, trusses, etc.)
  • Transporting heavy machinery and equipment
  • Loading and unloading trucks and trailers
  • Feeding material processing equipment (crushers, shredders, etc.)
  • Assisting with demolition projects
  • Choose the appropriate attachments for the specific task, such as forks, buckets, winches, or work platforms.
  • Securely load, lift, transport, and place materials precisely according to instructions and blueprints.
  • Conduct pre-operation checks to ensure the telehandler is functioning safely.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks on the telehandler, such as cleaning, greasing, and checking fluid levels.
  • Maintain clear communication with other crew members to ensure safe and coordinated operation.
  • Adhere to all established safety protocols and procedures on the job site.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to supervisors.
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of the telehandler at the worksite.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily operation and maintenance (may vary by employer).

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience operating a telehandler in a construction or similar environment.
  • Valid certification for telehandler operation (may be required by some employers).
  • Strong understanding of safe lifting practices and load capacities of the telehandler.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good physical condition, able to perform tasks that require bending, lifting, climbing, and operating machinery for extended periods.

Additional Skills (may be beneficial depending on the industry):
  • Knowledge of construction materials and procedures.
  • Experience with different telehandler attachments.
  • Understanding of basic maintenance principles.
Work Environment:
  • Telehandler operators typically work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold.
  • The job can be physically demanding and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
  • Construction sites can be loud and dusty.
  • Travel between different job sites is possible.
