Assistant Teacher I – Head Start
Hours: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Pay Rate: $15.10 - $15.25
Summary
The Assistant Teacher helps the Lead Teacher support preschool children’s learning and development. This role assists with daily classroom activities that encourage children’s social, emotional, physical, and learning growth. The Assistant Teacher also helps maintain a safe, supportive classroom and works with families and staff to support children’s development.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise children during classroom and outdoor activities to ensure safety at all times.
- Assist the Lead Teacher with planning and leading learning activities.
- Support children’s learning through one-on-one and small group interaction.
- Help maintain a positive classroom environment using age-appropriate guidance techniques.
- Assist with classroom projects, field trips, and daily routines.
- Help children during meals and teach healthy eating and social skills.
- Support children with personal care routines such as resting, brushing teeth, and using the restroom.
- Observe children and assist with documentation, assessments, and record keeping.
- Build positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
- Participate in parent meetings and encourage family involvement.
- Attend staff meetings and required training.
- Follow Head Start program standards and organization policies.
- Step in to lead the classroom when the Lead Teacher is absent.
- Report any concerns about child safety and help ensure all children are protected.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, equivalent certificate, or enrollment in a CDA program to be completed within 2 years.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work with children, families, and staff in a respectful and supportive way.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the Head Start program.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of family information.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and online systems).
- Willingness to complete required training such as First Aid and Pediatric CPR.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform active classroom duties (standing, bending, lifting, etc.).
- Pass required background checks and health screenings.
- Valid driver’s license may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages spoken by families).
- Additional early childhood education credentials.
