Tax Analyst (Indirect Tax – Sales & Use)
Job Summary: Talent Software Services is in search of a Tax Analyst - Indirect Tax for a contract position in Bloomfield Hills, MI. The opportunity will be 12 months with a strong chance for a long-term extension.
Position Summary: We are seeking a detail-oriented Tax Analyst with 3–5 years of experience to support indirect tax compliance for a national banking organization. This role is responsible for the accurate calculation, reporting, and remittance of sales and use taxes across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. The position offers exposure to complex financial services operations and the opportunity to partner with cross-functional teams including finance, operations, procurement, and legal.
Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and local jurisdictions
- Calculate and accrue use tax on bank purchases, fixed assets, and vendor invoices
- Review invoices and transactions to determine proper tax treatment and applicability
- Reconcile tax accounts and ensure timely and accurate remittance of tax liabilities
- Maintain and update taxability matrices and jurisdictional tax rules
- Support audits by responding to information requests and preparing documentation
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess impact to the organization
- Partner with Accounts Payable, Procurement, and business units to ensure proper tax treatment on transactions
- Assist in process improvements and automation initiatives within the tax function
- Support implementation and maintenance of tax systems and tools (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, or similar)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3–5 years of experience in indirect tax, preferably within financial services or a large corporate environment
- Strong knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax regulations and multi-state compliance
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (data analysis, reconciliations, pivot tables)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred:
- Experience in the banking, financial services, or retail industries
- Exposure to lease taxation, digital products/services taxability, or fixed asset tax treatment
- Analytical rigour and accuracy
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration
