Who We Are:
The Solar System Science and Exploration Division employs scientists and engineers who conduct basic observational, modeling and theoretical research in a wide range of solar system and astrophysical topics and are active in the scientific and instrumentation components of several space missions.
Objectives of this Role:
- Apply your knowledge and experience to directly support engineering teams on cutting edge research.
- Support the laboratory infrastructure for SwRI in Boulder, CO.
- Assist in the assembly, integration, and test of space flight hardware.
- Summer 2026 Student position.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical hardware and ground support equipment with senior mechanical engineers.
- Analyze, test, assemble mechanical hardware.
- Work with contamination control engineering on incoming inspection of parts and cleaning and processing parts.
- Assist with lab managers in performing cleanroom and lab maintenance activities.
Requirements:
- Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Must be entering Junior or Senior year.
- 0 years: Must be able to design and process mechanical hardware and perform basic mechanical assembly.
- Knowledge in the design of experiments, material characterization, mechanical testing, design, analysis, and testing is preferred.
- Basic mechanical skills, computer aided design experience, finite element analysis experience is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado. Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.

- Chemistry and Chemical Engineering-Performing research and technical services using chemistry and chemical engineering technology.
- Defense and & Intelligence Solutions-Providing advanced direction finding and tracking systems through geolocation system development.
- Fuels and Lubricants Research-Performing fuels and lubricants research activities to meet regulatory and competitive goals.
- Intelligent Systems-Providing engineering services in resaerch and development of complex systems and equipment.
- Mechanical Engineering-Improving safety, reliability, efficiency and life of new or existing mechanical components or systems.
- Powertrain Engineering-Designing and developing vehicle and engine components to achieve performance and emissions goals.
- Space Science & Engineering-Developing and managing advanced scientific payloads aboard satellites and sounding rockets.
