STUDENT ASSISTANT-R&D - Space Instrument Development

Who We Are:

The Space Instrumentation Group is composed of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and technicians within the Space Science Division at SwRI. The Space Instrumentation Group is responsible for the development of spacecraft, mechanisms, instrumentation, avionics and electronics for both government and industry.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Support SwRI's Space Science Division engineers and technicians with day to day project work and lab maintenance.
  • Local Student for Year-Round work (during regular school year and Summer break).
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Support SwRI's Space Science Division via design and mechanical hardware assembly.
  • Work side by side with engineers designing, analyzing, testing, and assembling mechanical and electrical hardware.
  • Assist engineering staff in researching manufacturing techniques, material sources, hardware suppliers, and process improvements for new mechanical and electrical designs.
  • Assist engineering staff in coordinating manufacturing activities.
  • Assist lab managers in performing cleanroom and lab maintenance activities.
Requirements:
  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Student entering their Sophomore or Junior year is required.
  • 0 years: Must have strong communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts from academic classes.
  • Programming and/or simulation tools from academic classes such as Labview or related.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical engineering concepts from academic classes .
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.

  • Defense and & Intelligence Solutions-Providing advanced direction finding and tracking systems through geolocation system development.
  • Fuels and Lubricants Research-Performing fuels and lubricants research activities to meet regulatory and competitive goals.
  • Intelligent Systems-Providing engineering services in resaerch and development of complex systems and equipment.
  • Mechanical Engineering-Improving safety, reliability, efficiency and life of new or existing mechanical components or systems.
  • Powertrain Engineering-Designing and developing vehicle and engine components to achieve performance and emissions goals.
  • Space Science & Engineering-Developing and managing advanced scientific payloads aboard satellites and sounding rockets.
