Sr. Safety Specialist – Pharmaceutical or Chemical – York, PA
The Opportunity
Our client, a unique and agile custom manufacturer working in a variety of industries, has engaged us to identify an Sr. Safety Specialist for their York, PA location.
This position reports to the EHS Manager and is responsible for managing process safety programs for chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturing operations, ensuring compliance with OSHA PSM requirements while promoting safe, reliable operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) programs
- Lead Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) including HAZOPs, What-If analyses, and LOPA studies
- Support Management of Change (MOC) reviews to identify and control safety risks
- Maintain process safety documentation including operating procedures and mechanical integrity records
- Evaluate risks associated with flammable, toxic, corrosive, and reactive chemicals
- Partner with engineering teams on equipment design, safeguards, and interlocks
- Support emergency response planning for chemical releases, fires, or explosions
- Conduct job hazard analyses, ergonomic assessments, and exposure evaluations
- Develop and deliver process safety training for operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel
- Collaborate cross-functionally on capital projects, process changes, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Serve as technical subject matter expert for process safety and chemical hazard management
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Safety Engineering, or related technical field
- 5+ years experience in chemical OR pharmaceutical manufacturing or processing environments
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA PSM, chemical hazard evaluation, and risk management
- Experience participating in or leading PHAs and MOC processes
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience with high-hazard chemical operations (flammables, corrosives, toxics, pressure systems)
- For pharmaceutical candidates: Experience with FDA/DEA regulations, potent compounds, and containment systems
- Experience supporting capital projects and startup safety reviews
- Professional certifications: CHMM, ASP, CSP, or CCPSC
- Completion of HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120), OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, First AID/CPR AED
- Experience with EHS risk management software (PHA Pro, Gensuite, EHS Insight)
