Sr. Operational Accountant

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of this role is to prepare journal entries, reconciliations, analysis, and regulatory and GAAP reporting. The department's essential function is to provide accounting and analysis for the gross margin components of Natural Gas segments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify and assist with the implementation of process improvements.
• Assist the Accounting Manager with monthly, quarterly, and yearly gross margin analysis.
• Prepare yearly budgets and monthly forecasts.
• Prepare federal reporting filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) quarterly and annually.
• Prepare fuel tracker mechanisms and provide to the regulatory department.
• Prepare journal entries accurately and timely for monthly accounting close.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
• Support internal and external audits by preparing data requests.
• Maintain working knowledge of fuel recovery mechanisms.
• Understand and consistently execute internal controls.
• Interface with all levels of management to support financial responsibilities.
• Offer assistance and act as a resource/mentor to the staff accountant.
• Interact with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy, and professionalism.
• Speak clearly, both in person and by telephone, using a high level of verbal skills and listen carefully.
• Maintain a regular, dependable attendance and a consistently high level of performance.
• Work non-traditional hours as needed.
• Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
• Perform other daily, weekly, monthly, or special project duties as identified and defined.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or a related discipline.

Experience/Specific Knowledge

• A minimum of 5 years of previous accounting experience.
• Understanding of accounting and reporting of transactions involving natural gas processing, transportation, and storage.
• Must have a fundamental understanding of GAAP.
• General understanding and demonstrated ability with computerized accounting systems and operations analysis.
• Intermediate proficiency level in MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Working Conditions

• May be required to carry a cell phone and be available to respond during working and non-working hours.
• The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, including a credit report for certain positions, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, Competencies, Skills, & Abilities

• Prior experience with FERC.
• Prior use and experience with Oracle and/or Quorum (Connect) billing software.
• Prior experience with regulatory recovery mechanisms.
