Position Summary
Under the direction of the Vice President of Safety and in partnership with Operations and executive leadership, the Senior Health & Safety Manager is responsible for leading and executing comprehensive, enterprise-wide Health & Safety programs across assigned RoadSafe operations. This role provides both strategic leadership and direct field support, driving safety culture, reducing workplace injuries, property damage, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
The Senior Manager partners closely with Operations, HR, and branch leadership to embed safety into operational planning, workforce execution, and business growth initiatives. The position requires extensive field engagement, leadership of safety initiatives and personnel, and regular travel to branch locations to reinforce standards, accountability, and continuous improvement. Additionally, this role will have direct reports, who are responsible for providing safety support across the assigned areas.
Essential Functions & Job Responsibilities
Safety Program Leadership & Strategy
- Support the development, execution, and continuous improvement of RoadSafe’s Health & Safety Program across the company.
- Translate enterprise safety strategy into actionable regional and branch-level execution plans.
- Establish regional safety goals, KPIs, and accountability frameworks aligned with company objectives.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on prevention, engagement, and continuous improvement.
Operational & Leadership Partnership
- Partner with Operations leadership and branch management to integrate safety into daily operations, workforce planning, and project execution.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Operations, HR, and leadership on health and safety matters.
- Influence leadership behaviors and decision-making to reinforce safety as a core operational value.
Hazard Mitigation & Field Safety
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend processes, controls, and product safety features to minimize employee exposure.
- Oversee safety assurance and quality control in field operations, including active traffic control and construction environments.
- Conduct job site observations and field audits to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Inspections, Compliance & Governance
- Perform and oversee routine and ad hoc inspections of facilities, machinery, vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and internal safety policies across the company.
- Track, document, and drive corrective actions to timely closure.
- Support and lead regulatory audits and inspections as required.
Incident Investigation & Risk Management
- Lead and oversee investigations of work-related accidents, injuries, near misses, and occupational illnesses.
- Determine root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Review incident trends, claims data, and audit findings to proactively mitigate risk.
- Escalate serious incidents and high-risk events appropriately.
Training, Standardization & Employee Engagement
- Conduct and certify employee training in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- Establish and deliver standardized safety training programs for field employees, supervisors, and leaders.
- Oversee health and safety orientations for new hires and develop supporting training materials.
- Facilitate safety meetings to address violations, reinforce standards, and share lessons learned.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and support Safety Managers.
- Set performance expectations, provide feedback, and support professional development.
- Promote consistency in safety processes, tools, and training across the enterprise.
Reporting & Executive Communication
- Develop and maintain regional safety reporting, dashboards, and forecasts.
- Provide regular updates to senior and executive leadership on safety performance, trends, risks, and improvement initiatives.
- Use data analytics to support decision-making and resource allocation.
Travel & Field Presence
- Maintain a strong field presence to reinforce safety standards and leadership visibility.
- Travel extensively to branch locations, typically up to 70–90%, depending on business needs.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong written, verbal, and executive-level communication skills.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate strategy into field execution.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and time management.
- Ability to influence and partner effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and safety reporting tools.
- Ability to work in fast-paced construction environments and varying field conditions.
- Able to lead and mentor direct reports.
Education, Certifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required, safety or related field preferred.
- OSHA 10-Hour Trainer certification (required).
- OSHA 30-Hour Trainer certification (preferred).
- First Aid / CPR / AED Trainer certification (required).
- Forklift Trainer certification (preferred).
- Experience having Safety Managers as direct reports (required).
- Prior construction experience (required).
- Prior road work / traffic control experience (preferred).
- Familiarity with ATSSA certifications strongly preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive safety experience in construction, traffic control, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience supporting or leading multi-location safety programs.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Successful completion of background check and drug screening required.
