Summary:

The Technology M&A and Standardization leader plays a crucial role in the M&A process, focusing on optimizing IT activities during pending and completed transactions. This leader will be responsible for directing the Information Technology aspects of Penn Medicine M&A – to include hospitals and physician practices – from planning through activation. This leader will work closely with DTS leadership, as well as Business Development as Penn Medicine assesses potential M&A targets. This leader will engage early and act as a liaison for all IT related activities including budgeting, staffing assessments, timeline planning and identifying risks associated with integration alternatives. 

The Technology M&A and Standardization leader will be responsible for directing the activities of a small group of direct reports that are responsible for facilitating the IT aspects of M&A activities. The IT M&A leader will also be responsible for directing the overall integration activities associated with all phases from due diligence through systems integration. In directing these activities, this leader will be responsible for leading very large teams of project directors/managers as well as tower leads during the integration and application/infrastructure activation work. Additionally, this leader will be responsible for ensuring that technology standards are adhered to across the Penn Medicine enterprise.  

Responsibilities:

  • Directs tshe activities of a small team of IT merger and acquisition analysts. These analysts will be engaging with the project management office, the business development office and DTS leaders as merger and acquisition activities are identified.
  • Works closely with the business development office as they assess merger and acquisition targets in both the ambulatory and hospital space. This collaborative work will ensure that all aspects of IT will be addressed when considering the costs, risks, timeframes and complexity associated with each opportunity. This work includes advising Penn Medicine leaders of IT implications that could potentially add cost or risk to pending transactions.
  • Maintains a best practices approach to assessing the IT implications of merger and acquisition activities. This includes developing relationships with peers in the industry.
  • Develops and maintains strong and collaborative relationships with key DTS leaders and groups to ensure that any merger and acquisition planning activities are crisp and time sensitive given the competitive nature of merger and acquisition activities.
  • Works with key DTS leaders to ensure that standards are established and maintained to ensure the rapid adoption of standard technologies during the integration work of new Penn Medicine entities. This leader will be responsible for identifying opportunities for transformative initiatives that will make the M&A activities more attractive from a business perspective.
  • Develops M&A playbooks that address the needs of the DTS organization – to include technology, applications, data and informatics. These playbooks should be updated and maintained such that they can be quickly deployed when M&A targets are identified. The playbooks will ensure a uniform approach to assess and integrating M&A targets.
  • Works with key DTS leaders to establish a budget for the integration activities with a focus on both capital and operating cost needs. Furthermore, the M&A leader will identify both contractual review and project management needs as part of the playbook process. The leader will work with external consulting resources as necessary during the due diligence stages of the process.
  • Stays engaged with each M&A opportunity until technology and application activation takes place. The IT M&A leader will document a event report at activation that summarizes the event calling out highlights and any budget or timing exceptions.
  • Ensures that technology standards are established and adopted enterprise wide.
  • Remains accountable for strategy when it comes to developing plans around M&A activities and technology standardization.
  • Develops and executes initiatives that streamline operations and reduce costs while leveraging M&A opportunities.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree is required. 
  • 10+ years of Information Technology experience is required. 
  • 3+ years Project Management experience is required. 
  • Master's degree is preferred.
