Start: As Soon As Possible
Shift / Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM (Central Time)
Overtime / Weekends / Holidays: As required based on staffing needs

Job Overview

The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides critical operational support within the Specimen Processing Department, ensuring specimens are handled with accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. This role supports laboratory production by performing high-volume processing and data entry in a regulated, biohazard environment where quality and turnaround time are essential.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform general specimen processing support functions, including A-station, presort, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
• Pick up and deliver processed specimens to laboratory departments.
• Perform imaging and microfilming of specimen documentation as required.
• Accurately enter data at production-level speed (up to 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour).
• Prepare and process specimens in accordance with client test orders and compliance regulations.
• Learn and adapt to frequently changing regulatory requirements related to test ordering.
• Resolve daily production demands while meeting departmental productivity and quality standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following biohazard and PPE protocols.
• Communicate effectively with staff at all levels and demonstrate flexibility in a changing work environment.
• Complete assigned training and competency requirements.

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills

• Strong data entry and computer proficiency.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to work accurately in a high-volume production environment.
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing.
• Familiarity with medical terminology.
• Prior experience in a laboratory, hospital, or production environment.

Additional Requirements

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and customer requirements.
• Commitment to safety, compliance, and quality standards.

Education & Experience

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
– No prior experience required.
– Previous laboratory, hospital, medical, or production experience preferred.
