Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Solution Architect to lead the architecture and technical design for a large-scale Energy Management System (EMS) replacement initiative, migrating from Hitachi Energy EMS platform to AspenTech EMS solutions.
The role will be responsible for defining the end-to-end architecture, system integration strategy, and technology roadmap to support a modern, scalable, and resilient transmission grid operations platform. The architect will work closely with grid operations stakeholders, IT teams, vendors, and implementation partners to ensure the successful delivery of a reliable and secure EMS ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
- Architecture & Solution Design
• Define the target architecture for the new EMS platform leveraging AspenTech EMS capabilities.
• Lead the technical migration strategy from Hitachi EMS, including system coexistence, phased cutover, and data transition approaches.
• Design high availability, disaster recovery, and redundancy architectures aligned with utility operational requirements.
• Establish integration architecture between EMS and adjacent systems such as:
• SCADA
• ICCP/TASE.2 external control center interfaces
• Market systems
• Outage Management Systems (OMS)
• Distribution Management Systems (DMS)
• Data historians and analytics platforms. - System Integration & Data Architecture
• Define architecture for real-time data ingestion and telemetry processing.
• Design data flows between substations, control centers, and enterprise systems.
• Ensure integration with industry protocols such as:
• ICCP / TASE.2
• DNP3
• IEC 61850
• CIM (Common Information Model). - Platform Modernization
• Guide modernization of control center infrastructure, including virtualization, hybrid cloud considerations, and containerized services where applicable.
• Define architecture standards for cybersecurity, identity management, and network segmentation aligned with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) CIP requirements. - Technical Leadership
• Act as the primary architecture authority across design, build, testing, and deployment phases.
• Provide technical leadership to engineering teams, vendors, and implementation partners.
• Review solution designs, interface specifications, and technical documentation.
• Support system factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and cutover planning. - Stakeholder Collaboration
• Work with Transmission Operations, Grid Reliability, and Market Operations teams to ensure operational requirements are reflected in the architecture.
• Coordinate with vendor architects from AspenTech and Hitachi during transition phases.
• Communicate architecture decisions to executive stakeholders and program leadership.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 12+ years of experience in utility IT/OT systems architecture.
- Hands-on experience with EMS platforms, preferably AspenTech EMS or other major vendors.
- Experience with control center technologies, SCADA systems, and real-time grid operations.
- Strong knowledge of utility integration standards (ICCP, IEC 61850, CIM, DNP3).
- Experience delivering large-scale EMS / SCADA implementations or migrations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with Transmission System Operators (TSO) or Independent System Operators (ISO).
- Prior involvement in EMS vendor migration programs.
- Familiarity with grid analytics, contingency analysis, and state estimation functions.
- Knowledge of cloud-enabled OT architectures and modern data platforms.
- Certifications such as TOGAF, PMP, or cloud architecture certifications.
