Sheet Metal Mechanic – Shipyard (Charleston)
Position Summary
The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing production sheet metal products and equipment in a shipyard/manufacturing environment. Work includes control boxes, drain pipes, ventilators, furnace casings, and related systems in accordance with blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
This position requires strict adherence to OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and Charleston location PPE requirements. The work environment is physically demanding and safety-critical.
Key Responsibilities
Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal components and systems.
Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications.
Develop sheet metal layouts and patterns.
Set up and operate fabrication machinery (shears, brakes, rollers, punches, etc.).
Form and shape metal over anvils, blocks, and forms.
Perform welding, soldering, and fastening operations as required.
Install assemblies and verify alignment and structural integrity.
Inspect completed work for compliance with specifications and quality standards.
Monitor and verify quality using statistical process control or other quality procedures.
Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and industrial environments.
Required Certifications & Training
Candidates must meet the following training and medical clearance requirements:
Confined Space Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1915 Subpart B
Hazard Communication Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200
Respirator Qualification & Medical Clearance – OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134
Negative-pressure respirator trained
MSA Comfo Classic required
Daily respirator use may occur
Fall Protection Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1915 applicable sections
4D body harness
Vertical & horizontal lifelines
Beam clamp systems
ANSI Z359.1 compliant equipment
Leading Edge compliant SRLs
PPE Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1915 Subpart I
Hearing Conservation Training – OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95
Audiometric Testing Documentation
Hexavalent Chromium Medical Clearance

Kleenguard Calico safety glasses
Flame-resistant (FR) coveralls (long sleeve)
Full welding jacket
Welding shield leather bib
8” safety boots or leather safety shoes with spats
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Physically demanding labor including lifting, bending, climbing, kneeling, and prolonged standing
Exposure to industrial noise, heat, humidity, and confined spaces
Elevated work and fall protection usage required
Strict PPE enforcement at all times
