SHEET METAL FABRICATOR ROLE

SALARY: Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience.

LOCATION: Hampton Roads Area, Virgina


Position

Our client is seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Fabricator to join our Hampton Roads shop team. This is a shop-based fabrication role focused on the layout, cutting, forming, and assembly of architectural sheet metal components used in commercial and institutional roofing systems. The Metal Fabricator will produce custom flashings, copings, edge metals, gutters, downspouts, and related accessories to precise specifications. This position does not require field installation work.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Read and interpret architectural drawings, shop drawings, and project specifications to determine fabrication requirements for roofing sheet metal components.

• Operate brakes, shears, folders, roll formers, notchers, seamers, and other sheet metal fabrication equipment to cut, bend, form, and shape metal to specification.

• Fabricate custom flashings, copings, cap metals, edge details, counterflashing, gutters, downspouts, scuppers, conductor heads, and other architectural sheet metal accessories.

• Work with a variety of metals including galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and pre-finished/coated metals in various gauges.

• Lay out patterns and templates using measurements, hand tools, and computerized layout systems as applicable.

• Perform soldering, spot welding, riveting, and mechanical seaming as needed for component assembly.

• Verify dimensions and quality of fabricated pieces against project drawings and quality standards prior to release.

• Maintain accurate production logs including material usage, quantities fabricated, and project tracking information.

• Coordinate with Project Managers and field crews to understand project timelines, priorities, and any special fabrication requirements

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA standards and safety policies.

• Assist with material inventory management, including receiving shipments and organizing stock.

Perform routine maintenance on shop equipment, report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.


Qualifications & Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience in sheet metal fabrication, preferably in a commercial roofing or architectural sheet metal environment.

• Proficient in operating standard sheet metal shop equipment including power brakes, shears, folders, and roll formers.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, and shop detail drawings.

• Strong working knowledge of common roofing metals, gauges, finishes, and their fabrication characteristics.

• Competency in basic math, measurement, and layout skills including fractions, angles, and geometry.

• Familiarity with soldering, welding, and mechanical fastening techniques.

• Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and stand for extended periods.

• Valid driver’s license.

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.


Preferred

• 5+ years of architectural sheet metal fabrication experience.

• Experience fabricating for institutional or government projects (hospitals, military installations, schools).

• Familiarity with SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association) standards for architectural sheet metal.

• Experience with CNC or computer-assisted fabrication equipment.

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

• Journeyman sheet metal worker certification or equivalent trade school completion.


Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods throughout the shift.

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

• Manual dexterity sufficient to operate fabrication equipment and hand tools safely.

• Vision adequate for reading measurements, blueprints, and inspecting finished work for quality.

• Ability to work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, metal dust, and varying temperatures.
