About the Role
Our client operates within a high-performance engineering culture focused on technical excellence, collaboration, and mission success. The Gilbert, Arizona facility is a leading designer of spaceflight hardware within the Spacecraft Avionics business unit of the Space & Defense Group. Programs support crewed spaceflight, lunar exploration, satellite communications, asteroid research missions, and complete satellite bus platforms for defense applications.
Our client is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) supporting aerospace avionics and embedded systems. This role combines hardware design, test automation, embedded software integration, environmental testing, and formal verification within a regulated aerospace environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and manufacture of Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE), including development of integrated test systems comprised of hardware, software, and controlled engineering documentation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems engineering, firmware, hardware, and manufacturing to meet program schedules and technical requirements
- Support Integration & Test (I&T) activities and system-level verification and validation (V&V) for space-rated avionics hardware
Test Hardware Responsibilities
- Develop EGSE hardware to interface with Units Under Test (UUT) containing embedded Single Board Computers (SBCs)
- Support systems utilizing analog and digital I/O for Command & Data Handling (C&DH) within a cPCI architecture
- Interface with Electrical Power System (EPS) boards supporting subsystem power switching, solar array switching, and battery charging
- Perform COTS test instrument selection and integration for automated aerospace test systems
- Design custom test enclosures (“test boxes”), fixtures, and cable assemblies to ensure full verification of contractual and functional requirements
- Apply hardware design development principles to ensure reliability, maintainability, and compliance with aerospace standards
Test Software & Automation
- Develop National Instruments LabVIEW virtual instruments (VIs) for instrument control, telemetry monitoring, and user interface (UI) development
- Create Python or PERL scripts to enable test automation and coordinated execution of VxWorks and LabVIEW environments
- Support integration of VxWorks-based test code written in C for embedded SBC platforms
- Collaborate with FPGA engineers with familiarity in VHDL for hardware-software integration and digital interface validation
- Implement automated acceptance testing, environmental testing support, and regression test execution
Documentation & Compliance
- Create and maintain assembly drawings, electrical schematics, cable drawings, and parts lists for custom EGSE hardware
- Develop documentation using Microsoft Visio, Excel, Word, and controlled document management systems such as Intercept Mozaix
- Author Integration & Test Plans (ITPs), Environmental Test Plans (ETPs), and Acceptance Test
- Procedures (ATPs) as formal customer deliverables
- Document compliance with contractual specifications, aerospace standards, and system requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 7–10 years of experience in aerospace test engineering, electronics design, or embedded systems development
- Proficiency in software development using C, LabVIEW, Python, or PERL
- Experience supporting embedded systems, SBC platforms, real-time operating systems such as VxWorks, and automated test equipment
- Knowledge of hardware design development, lab troubleshooting, and system-level debug
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools including Visio, Word, and Excel
- Experience creating cable drawings and electrical documentation
- Self-motivated with strong ownership mindset and ability to execute on schedule
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers in hardware development, software development, debugging, and test execution
