Senior Scientist, Data Science

BHSI

Seattle, WA

Job Title:

Senior Scientist, Data Science

Duties:

Support the Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (CAT E&A) team through conducting independent research and providing leadership in identifying and applying cutting-edge data science techniques to build a better view of the catastrophe risk for multiple natural and man-made perils.

Specific duties include:

  1. Utilize the latest data science techniques to evaluate and develop insights into large and diverse data sets from claims (property and casualty), exposures, natural hazard models,
  • structural analysis, geospatial sources, and various other public/proprietary datasets.
  1. Lead the use of data-based models to advance physics-based models, as well as building independent data-based models to evaluate frequency and severity of various risks (e.g., cyber, supply chain) in the man-made environment.
  2. Research and develop expertise in advanced data science and machine learning techniques, and their application to understanding and pricing risk.
  3. Critically evaluate vendor catastrophe models and datasets to determine applicability to specific accounts, regions, and perils via the application of data science principles, probability, and statistics, with the ultimate goal of determining the validity of these advanced models to identify potential economic loss metrics during a natural or man-made catastrophe event.
  4. Communicate risk evaluation and risk and model development results to both internal and external stakeholders.
  5. Be in a supervisory position to newer, less experienced engineers or scientists and have responsibility for allocation of tasks and oversight of their work product. Be effective as a guide and mentor for the professional growth for the newer team members.

Position Requirements:

Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Earth Science, or a related field, plus 3 years of experience as a Data Scientist within the insurance or engineering industry or similar role.

Experience must include the following:

  • 3 years of experience utilizing statistical and probabilistic concepts and methodologies, including probability distributions, correlation, uncertainty, MLE, regression and other statistical algorithms applied to loss modeling and pricing.
  • 3 years of experience analyzing and generating geospatial data and utilizing GIS technology, platforms, or related tools.
  • 3 years of experience conducting hazard analytics as related to catastrophe models for earthquake and windstorm perils.
  • 3 years of experience applying advanced statistical techniques and machine learning to structural performance, natural hazards, or property and casualty insurance risks.
  • 3 years of experience applying statistical and machine learning techniques to process and analyze specialty insurance related data such as property exposure data, policy data, or
  • claims data.
  • 3 years of experience programming in Python, R, MATLAB and SQL to create ad-hoc reports on model parameters, exposure information, and loss potentials.

Salary:

$196,914year.
