Position Overview
The Senior Platform Engineer will serve as a key technical leader within the Infrastructure team, owning complex systems and solving highly ambiguous challenges end-to-end. This role involves architecting and maintaining hybrid cloud infrastructure across Azure, AWS, and on prem environments; driving technical alignment; and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate excels at breaking down complex initiatives into actionable tasks, making informed technical tradeoffs, and championing modern engineering practices throughout the organization.
Responsibilities
Scope & Impact
- Own problem spaces or projects end-to-end, beyond individual features or tasks.
- Define scope for yourself and team members; oversee designs spanning multiple contributors.
- Design solutions with consideration for upstream/downstream system integrations.
- Solve ambiguous infrastructure challenges without clear or predefined answers.
- Serve as technical lead on infrastructure initiatives and break down complex work into executable steps.
Architecture & System Design
- Architect infrastructure subsystems with long-term scalability and failure modes in mind.
- Evaluate and deconstruct complex systems to identify areas for improvement.
- Design and implement cloud architecture across Azure (VMs, VNets, Storage, Entra ID) and AWS (EC2, VPC, S3, IAM).
- Architect and manage on-prem virtualization platforms including Hyper V and Client vSphere.
- Design and maintain hybrid cloud integrations between on prem and cloud environments.
- Make balanced technical tradeoffs between short term business needs and long term goals.
- Advocate for new technologies and engineering techniques.
- Document architecture decisions and detailed system interactions.
Engineering Practices
- Develop and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform for multi cloud provisioning.
- Implement and optimize configuration management with Ansible, Chef, or similar tools.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment and configuration.
- Identify technical debt and implement refactoring to improve team and system velocity.
- Automate processes to reduce operational overhead and improve efficiency.
- Administer Windows Server and Linux systems across hybrid environments.
- Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, and Entra ID (Azure AD).
- Establish technical standards and guide planning and timelines.
- Integrate methodologies and architectural principles across the organization.
Quality & Reliability
- Uphold and improve quality standards for infrastructure engineering.
- Design metrics, monitoring, and alerting for all infrastructure components.
- Implement observability solutions (e.g., SumoLogic, Datadog).
- Lead and manage high pressure incident response for owned services.
- Coordinate deployments using proper communication and change management.
- Conduct root cause analysis for complex failures.
- Ensure adherence to engineering and security standards.
- Document runbooks, processes, and architectural designs.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Drive technical alignment and cross-team collaboration.
- Mentor junior engineers and support their career development.
- Facilitate technical decision-making and navigate disagreements constructively.
- Help teams integrate diverse technical approaches and resolve conflicts.
- Provide actionable feedback in code and design reviews.
- Collaborate with InfoSec, DevOps, Network, and Application teams.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 5–8+ years in Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
- Proven ownership of complex systems and technical problem spaces.
- Experience leading large-scale technical initiatives and mentoring engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to solve ambiguous problems and make strategic technical decisions.
- Experience architecting systems for scale, reliability, and maintainability.
- History of identifying technical debt and delivering infrastructure improvements.
Technical Skills
- Infrastructure as Code: Expert-level Terraform for multi-cloud provisioning.
- Cloud Platforms: Deep experience with Azure and AWS.
- Virtualization: Hyper V and Client vSphere/ESXi expertise.
- Operating Systems: Advanced Windows Server and Linux administration.
- Identity Management: Active Directory, Group Policy, Entra ID, federation services.
- Configuration Management: Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or similar.
- CI/CD: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI.
- Scripting & Automation: Python, PowerShell, Bash.
- Monitoring & Observability: SumoLogic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana.
- Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, load balancing, network security.
