This role involves architecting and maintaining hybrid cloud infrastructure across Azure, AWS, and on prem environments; driving technical alignment; and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate excels at breaking down complex initiatives into actionable tasks, making informed technical tradeoffs, and championing modern engineering practices throughout the organization.

  • Define scope for yourself and team members; oversee designs spanning multiple contributors.
  • Design solutions with consideration for upstream/downstream system integrations.
  • Solve ambiguous infrastructure challenges without clear or predefined answers.
  • Serve as technical lead on infrastructure initiatives and break down complex work into executable steps.

Architecture & System Design

  • Architect infrastructure subsystems with long-term scalability and failure modes in mind.
  • Evaluate and deconstruct complex systems to identify areas for improvement.
  • Design and implement cloud architecture across Azure (VMs, VNets, Storage, Entra ID) and AWS (EC2, VPC, S3, IAM).
  • Architect and manage on-prem virtualization platforms including Hyper V and Client vSphere.

  • Make balanced technical tradeoffs between short term business needs and long term goals.
  • Advocate for new technologies and engineering techniques.
  • Document architecture decisions and detailed system interactions.

Engineering Practices

  • Develop and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform for multi cloud provisioning.
  • Implement and optimize configuration management with Ansible, Chef, or similar tools.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment and configuration.
  • Identify technical debt and implement refactoring to improve team and system velocity.
  • Automate processes to reduce operational overhead and improve efficiency.
  • Administer Windows Server and Linux systems across hybrid environments.
  • Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, and Entra ID (Azure AD).
  • Establish technical standards and guide planning and timelines.
  • Integrate methodologies and architectural principles across the organization.

Quality & Reliability

  • Uphold and improve quality standards for infrastructure engineering.
  • Design metrics, monitoring, and alerting for all infrastructure components.
  • Implement observability solutions (e.g., SumoLogic, Datadog).
  • Lead and manage high pressure incident response for owned services.
  • Coordinate deployments using proper communication and change management.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for complex failures.
  • Ensure adherence to engineering and security standards.
  • Document runbooks, processes, and architectural designs.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Drive technical alignment and cross-team collaboration.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support their career development.
  • Facilitate technical decision-making and navigate disagreements constructively.
  • Help teams integrate diverse technical approaches and resolve conflicts.
  • Provide actionable feedback in code and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with InfoSec, DevOps, Network, and Application teams.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
