Senior Nursing Director, Perioperative Services

MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a flagship academic medical center within MedStar Health, is seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Nursing Director of Perioperative Services to provide executive nursing leadership across perioperative operations. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead complex, high-acuity surgical services within a nationally recognized health system committed to excellence in patient care, quality, safety, and innovation.

Position Overview

The Senior Nursing Director of Perioperative Services is a key member of the Division of Nursing leadership team and assumes 24/7 administrative responsibility for the operational, clinical, financial, and personnel management of perioperative nursing services. This leader drives strategic initiatives, advances professional nursing practice, and fosters a culture of shared governance, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with MedStar Health’s Patient First philosophy and SPIRIT Values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership for perioperative nursing operations, including planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care delivery systems.
  • Ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient perioperative care that aligns with regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice standards.
  • Lead fiscal and resource management, including budget development, productivity oversight, and strategic allocation of personnel and resources.
  • Partner with executive, medical, and interdisciplinary leaders to advance organizational goals, quality outcomes, patient experience, and nursing-sensitive indicators.
  • Champion performance improvement initiatives, high-reliability practices, patient throughput, and operational excellence.
  • Support Magnet® Recognition and evidence-based practice initiatives, including research, shared governance, and nursing innovation.
  • Oversee talent strategy for perioperative services, including recruitment, retention, performance management, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Serve as a nursing leader for entity-wide initiatives related to safety, service excellence, and patient- and family-centered care.
  • Represent the Division of Nursing internally and externally through professional organizations, academic partnerships, and community engagement.
  • Provide administrative coverage in the absence of the Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer, as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from a nationally accredited program
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or a related healthcare field
  • Active RN license in the District of Columbia before start date
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, including Director level or higher
  • Demonstrated expertise in healthcare operations, financial management, quality, and strategic leadership
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and executive presence

Preferred

  • Doctoral degree in Nursing Leadership or Health Services Administration
  • National certification in Nursing Administration (e.g., NEA-BC or CENP; required within one year if not already obtained)
