Senior Network Engineer

Location: Kings Point, NY (Onsite U.S. Merchant Marine Academy)
Clearance: Public Trust
Employment Type: Contingent (Contract, Possible Direct Hire)
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours/week
Duration: 6 months with possibility of extension
Start Date Target: March 16, 2026


Role Summary

The Network Engineer III will provide comprehensive network engineering support at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York. This role supports a broad range of programs and covers the full system engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, integration, testing, implementation, and ongoing operations.

The position requires advanced technical expertise, independent judgment, and the ability to handle complex and occasionally unusual network challenges. The engineer will serve in a lead capacity, providing technical direction and guidance to junior engineers while working closely with customers, functional managers, and occasionally senior leadership.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall network engineering support across multiple programs and environments

  • Design, implement, troubleshoot, analyze, and maintain enterprise networks

  • Configure, test, and maintain LAN, WAN, DMZ, and wireless network infrastructures

  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex network issues using structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis

  • Support the full system engineering lifecycle: requirements analysis, design, development, integration, testing, and implementation

  • Evaluate and recommend new network technologies to enhance existing capabilities

  • Establish technical objectives and independently determine methods to achieve them

  • Ensure project schedules and performance requirements are met

  • Create, maintain, and update comprehensive technical documentation for networks, applications, and appliances

  • Apply NIST and FISMA standards within a government operating environment

  • Establish and recommend changes to technical policies and procedures

  • Serve as a technical lead, providing direction, mentoring, and training to less experienced network engineers

  • Coordinate technical activities with customers, cross-functional teams, and management


Required Technical Skills

  • Hands-on experience implementing and administering network devices in a structured environment, including policy configuration and maintenance

  • Cisco switching and routing configuration experience

  • LAN, WAN, DMZ, and wireless networking

  • Wireless network design, planning, optimization, and deployment

  • Aruba wireless architecture, including Wireless and Network Access Control

  • Firewall and VPN configuration, management, and analysis

  • Network access security tools

  • Nutanix Prism and Acropolis hypervisor management

  • Microsoft Server Active Directory and Group Policy management

  • PowerShell scripting and implementation

  • Level 2 and Level 3 support in Windows Server and Windows 11 environments

  • Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and network optimization skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical documentation


Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience working in a government environment using NIST and FISMA frameworks


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor s degree in a related field

  • 5 7 years of hands-on network engineering experience

  • Ability to handle complex, infrequent, and non-routine technical issues

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while providing guidance to junior staff

  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries

Certifications (Minimum One Required):

  • CCNA or CCNP

  • ITIL v3

Security & Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder

  • Must have resided in the U.S. for at least 3 years

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
