Job Details
Responsibilities
Underwriting & Credit Decisioning
- Underwrite all loan types, including complex products
- Analyze credit, collateral, and borrower financials (tax returns, balance sheets, cash flow, AGI)
- Make credit and approval decisions within corporate SLAs
- Determine counteroffer eligibility for alternative products/programs
- Perform second-level/quality review of other underwriters’ files
- Ensure compliance with company and secondary market investor standards
Investor & Compliance
- Interpret and apply FHA, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, USDA, and Conventional guidelines
- Ensure loans are saleable in the secondary market
- Respond to investor, agency, and internal quality control audits
- Apply MI (Mortgage Insurance) policies accurately
Leadership, Training & Enablement
- Train and mentor new underwriters
- Develop underwriting training materials
- Provide technical guidance to underwriters, originators, processors, and closers
- Monitor and manage Mortgage Underwriting Scenarios Mailbox
Systems & Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Act as Underwriting Department liaison to IT
- Support LOS and underwriting system improvements
Required Qualifications
Min 5+ years of recent mortgage lending experience
Min 3+ years of recent mortgage underwriting experience
Deep knowledge of:
- FHA, VA, FNMA, FHLMC, Conventional guidelines
- Underwriting procedures and real estate appraisals
- Complex personal and business financial analysis
- Tax return, balance sheet, cash flow, and AGI analysis
- MI policies
Certifications
- FHA DE – Required
- VA LAPP/SAR - PREFERRED
Skills
- Advanced analytical and decision-making skills
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Negotiation skills
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
