Job Summary:
The Senior Instructional Designer (SID) will lead the design and development of technical training programs supporting Fossil and Solar Power Generation teams. This role drives workforce development initiatives, ensures compliance with operational standards, and aligns curriculum strategy with organizational goals. The SID partners with stakeholders and subject matter experts to design structured, multi-year learning programs that support technician performance and long-term capability building.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct needs assessments and front-end analyses (FEA) to identify training requirements and recommend effective learning solutions for Fossil and Solar technicians.
  • Collaborate with Senior Learning Strategists and Instructional Designers to determine learning strategies, curriculum maps, and assessment approaches.
  • Review off-the-shelf courses with SMEs for inclusion in technician curriculum.
  • Guide the use of appropriate learning technologies and tools; propose solutions to stakeholders.
  • Coach and support Instructional Designers in applying the ADDIE model to develop new technical training courses.
  • Lead quality assurance (QA) reviews and ensure training meets established standards.
  • Estimate project costs and develop schedules in partnership with Learning Strategists and Designers.
  • Manage project execution to ensure deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
  • Facilitate key project meetings including Kick-offs, Betas, Train-the-Trainers, and Pilots.
  • Track project status and provide stakeholder updates.
  • Analyze training effectiveness metrics and implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Archive course materials and complete project close-out activities.
Required Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of instructional design experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or mentoring role.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design for classroom, technical, or trades environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing multi-year technical training programs.
  • Proven experience managing small to mid-sized projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience designing structured learning paths.
  • Excellent communication skills with strong stakeholder engagement abilities.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
  • Experience developing apprenticeship programs in skilled trades.
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field.
  • Utility industry or trades experience.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Questionmark, Author-It, MS Teams, Articulate Storyline, video production tools, web design tools, and virtual learning platforms.
  • Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence tools to support efficient work.

Work Location & Travel Requirements:
  • Only candidates local to the Bay Area/Livermore work location will be considered.
  • Assignment is hybrid and requires travel within the service territory twice per month.
  • Locations include, but are not limited to: Antioch, Colusa, Auburn, Livermore, and Oakland.
  • Occasional overnight stays may be required to support client meetings and project milestones.
  • Travel expenses (mileage and lodging) will be reimbursable where applicable.
  • PPE will be provided if needed.
  • A laptop will be issued; any additional equipment must be provided by the supplier.
