A well established, growth-oriented construction contractor is seeking a Senior Design Engineer — Temporary Works to lead internal construction engineering for complex infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on railroad bridge design-build and project controls alignment.
This role leads Temporary Works and Construction Means & Methods engineering with an internal design focus that supports project controls and field delivery. The role manages design governance, sealed deliverables, revision control, inspections, and alignment with outage windows and schedule milestones.

What You’ll Do (Essential Duties & Responsibilities)
Internal Design Governance
- Apply company temporary works policy across all design items
- Maintain the Design Item Register with risk tiering and review levels
- Open and manage Design Work Orders (DWOs)
- Lead 30% and final design gate reviews with documented outcomes
- Use drawing-release checklists to support right-first-time submissions
Temporary Works Engineering & Sealed Deliverables
Plan, analyze, and design temporary works including:
Shoring, falsework, and formwork
Stability and bracing of partially completed structures
Engineered rigging, lifting, launching, and erection systems
Temporary trestles and work platforms
Cofferdams and excavation support
Scaffolding, access systems, and custom devices
Prepare sealed calculations and drawings
Maintain full traceability from criteria through inspection and closeout
Rail Design-Build Leadership
- Serve as technical lead for railroad bridge pursuits and execution
- Translate rail standards into constructible engineering solutions
- Coordinate with railroad owners on submittals, outages, and track windows
- Develop preliminary and final design packages and risk registers
- Lead value engineering and alternative technical concepts
Project Controls Alignment
- Align engineering deliverables with integrated schedules
- Publish design forecasts and manage recovery when schedules shift
- Drive RFI and NCR turnaround
- Control revisions, transmittals, and design scope management
- Develop reusable templates to improve cycle time and review efficiency
Field Engagement & Inspection
- Verify site conditions and update design criteria when needed
- Lead or support pre-use inspections with documented records
- Provide on-site engineering presence during critical lifts and staged work
- Exercise stop-work authority when assumptions are violated
Third-Party Engineering Oversight
- Recommend qualified third-party engineering firms for specialized design needs, particularly those experienced in railroad bridge temporary works and construction means and methods
- Oversee third-party engagement to ensure alignment with project goals, schedule, and applicable standards
- Review and audit calculations, drawings, and inspection documentation
- Ensure compliance with internal governance and risk-tiered review levels
- Facilitate coordination between third-party engineers and internal teams to resolve technical challenges
- Maintain full documentation of oversight activities to ensure traceability and accountability throughout the project lifecycle
Stakeholder & Team Leadership
- Partner daily with project managers, superintendents, fabricators, and vendors
- Mentor junior engineers and lead design reviews
- Support multidisciplinary coordination while maintaining pace
Required Software & Tools
- Structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM, STAAD, SAP2000 or equivalent
- AutoCAD required; Civil 3D or Revit as needed
- Tekla Structures preferred for temporary works modeling
- Bluebeam for review workflows
- Microsoft Project and/or Primavera P6 for schedule alignment
- CDE platforms such as SharePoint or ProjectWise
Codes & Standards Experience (as applicable)
- Railway engineering standards and railroad owner requirements
- Structural and bridge design codes (AISC, AASHTO, ASCE, IBC)
- Concrete and formwork standards
- Construction safety regulations
- Temporary works policies and controlled design release processes
Key Measures of Success (KPIs)
- Design cycle time and on-time delivery of outage-driven packages
- First-pass approval rates
- Audit and governance compliance
- Field performance outcomes tied to temporary works
- Value engineering savings and risk reduction
What You Bring (Qualifications & Education)
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required
- Master’s degree preferred
Experience
- 10+ years in construction engineering with strong temporary works focus
- Rail bridge design, staging, or erection experience
- Design-build experience strongly preferred
Credentials
- Licensed Professional Engineer required (reciprocity expected)
- Structural Engineer (SE) a plus
Skills
- Strong command of temporary works design
- Experience with railroad standards and outage planning
- Ability to build audit-ready design packages
- Strong field engagement and communication
- Proven leadership and mentorship ability
Highly Preferred Experience
- Railroad bridge design-build leadership
