Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: + The Principal Scientist, Bioinformatics, performs work independently and functions as a highly skilled contributor/researcher by demonstrating advanced knowledge in the areas of bioinformatics techniques, research and methods of analyzing data from experimental platforms. + Duties include designing and developing software, databases, and interfaces for analyzing and manipulating research data. + Responsible for analyzing and interpreting results of experiments. + Collaborates with researchers to develop high throughput data processing and analysis capability and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results. + Directs and guides database searches and the computational analysis of resulting data. + Provides direct technical customer support and helps guide, implement, and maintain further improvements to bioinformatics software, databases, and interfaces and works with the entire bioinformatics team to diagnose and fix related issues. + Will have leadership responsibilities on projects, may design, develop, and conduct research experiments. + May provide workflow direction to subordinates, oversee quality and training of team members, and may serve as a mentor to junior staff. + May assist in grant and other funding applications. + With the approval of the supervisor and the responsible faculty director may serve as principal investigator on funded proposals, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas or methodology development and user support. + May be required to perform simple programming using Perl/Python or Java, statistical programming, web-development, and database query through SQL. Performs other responsibilities as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: + PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, biological or physical science, or a related discipline and ten years of experience in software development in support of bioinformatics applications. + Eligible experience is experience obtained following the achievement of earning the PhD. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS + Knowledge of proteomics data acquisition and processing pipelines + D. or equivalent degree in biostatistics, statistics, bioinformatics, or basic science discipline + Programming experience in Perl/Python or C/C++ Experience using version control (Git) + Experience using Amazon web services for distributed computing or a local cluster + Basic Linux system administration skills + Demonstrable experience analyzing –omics data + Proficiency in using R or Python, and Linux command line + Excellent communication skills + Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
