POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety Manager provides leadership in workplace safety, environmental compliance, and risk management across Michael Foods locations. This role ensures a safe and compliant work environment, aligning with OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.

 

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing safety strategies, leading training efforts, conducting audits, and driving continuous improvement in accident prevention. As a key member of the management team, this role influences both location and company-wide safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and workplace safety regulations.

 

This position has the responsibility to comply with Safety work rules at all times as well as an obligation to reinforce Safety as a Core Value. Ensures that all policies, procedures and activities, related to Health & Safety, are followed and complied with uniformly, in an effort to reduce loss.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 

  • Lead the facility’s Safety Risk Management Program, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal workplace safety and environmental regulations.
  • Supervise and mentor site Safety Assistants, supporting their growth in the EHS field.
  • Investigate and document workplace accidents and injuries, conducting root cause analysis (RCA) and implementing corrective actions.
  • Support the MFI Environmental team at the site level, ensuring environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives as well as site security team.
  • Develop and lead safety training programs, incorporating regulatory requirements and best practices, utilizing adult learning techniques.
  • Coordinate safety inspections, including scheduled audits, Behavior-Based Observations (BBOs), and industrial hygiene assessments.
  • Participate in the facility’s Management of Change (MOC) process, focusing on safety aspects of procedural updates.
  • Monitor and track facility-wide safety data, leveraging Intelex to analyze trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Manage workers' compensation cases, collaborating with HR, management, and insurance providers to ensure appropriate case handling.
  • Participate in regulatory agency audits, ensuring inspection readiness and timely corrective action implementation.
  • Provide leadership in safety element team meetings, ensuring engagement across all organizational levels.
  • Monitor and maintain departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effective safety program execution.
  • Accountable for a safe and healthy workplace for everyone. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures and, incorporate safety and health in all jobs and tasks.
  • Adhere to Quality work practices, follow GMP’s, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained.  Report to management any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety and quality.

Perform other duties as assigned, including working flexible shifts, weekends, and overtime when required.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards, food safety regulations, and case management procedures for workplace incidents.

 

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

 

  • Leadership & Influence – Ability to lead cross-functional teams, drive strategic safety initiatives, and influence workplace culture.
  • Problem-Solving & Risk Analysis – Expertise in root cause analysis (RCA), data-driven decision-making, and compliance assessment.
  • Training & Employee Development – Strong experience in adult learning techniques, facilitating safety meetings, and delivering compliance training.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Audit Management – Ability to interpret regulations, lead inspections, and execute compliance strategies.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present safety concepts effectively to all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and safety management systems (Intelex, SharePoint, SAP).

 

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • OSHA 30-hour certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Safety Management Specialist (SMS) certification preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification highly desired.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish/Somali preferred.
  • Ability to work in cold, hot, wet, noisy, or dusty environments as required.
