Title: Safety and Development Specialist
Department: Operations-Management
Reports to: Vice President of Operations
Back up Director of Operations
Role:
The Safety and Development Specialist is responsible for the overall safety program at the plant, ensuring that employees and Specialists follow health and safety regulations, developing, implementing, and training on safety policies, and investigating accidents in the workplace. This includes onboarding of new employees and managing various training programs. This individual will also be the first responder for injuries and administering first aid, and coordinating for more advanced care, if necessary.
Primary Accountabilities:
• Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT)
• Promote an accident-free work environment and works to create a true safety culture
• Advise senior management on safety compliance concerns and preventive actions
• Monitor safety performance, taking appropriate action to ensure safe work practices and prevent/resolve safety infractions; support safety initiative and incentives
• Plan and implement safety training for employees and Specialists in work-site safety best practices
• Conduct new hire safety training as part of the overall onboarding process
• Maintain safety files and records; creates KPI’s and other safety metrics
• Perform safety audits and inspections, prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive

• Perform safety audits and inspections, prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented
• Conduct post-accident investigations and prepare reports identifying possible root cause analysis and hazards
• Develop, evaluate, and/or upgrade all safety programs
• Assist in the management and administration of workers’ compensation programs, to include reporting, return-to-work, light duty, and regular follow-ups to reduce the company’s exposure
• Assist in the evaluation of powered industrial truck skills for new hires
• Maintain OSHA logs and environmental filings, including permits and inspections
Development Responsibilities
• Provide oversite and direction to skills training programs do develop unskilled labor into more advanced skilled roles; Develop training programs and protocols
• Develop programs to reduce the attrition rate for production employees, specifically those with less than one year of service
• Work with supervisors and Specialists to develop coaching and mentoring approaches to staff development; reduce ramp up time to full productivity
• Work cross functionally to develop and deploy training in the following areas: safety, ergonomics, butcher knife skills, saw operator and trimmer skills, pallet jack and forklift operations, as well as other necessary skills to advance
• Work with supervisors and Specialists to develop skill standards for passing each level of training
Capabilities and Experience
Required:
• College degree plus 5-10 years of related work experience
• Advanced knowledge and experience in safety in a food manufacturing environment
• Experience in developing and delivering training on a number of topics
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Proven leadership skills
• Strong knowledge of OSHA & DOT requirements
• Working knowledge of OSHA 1910
• Proficiency with Microsoft products
• Bi-lingual Spanish/English skills preferred
• Trained and/or certified in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Blood-borne Pathogen handling
