Job Summary
The Risk Manager plays a critical role in supporting hospital safety operations by reviewing, adjudicating, and ensuring proper follow-up on safety event reports. This position requires strong experience in risk mitigation, medical malpractice, and serious reportable events (SREs). The Risk Manager collaborates with specialists and hospital teams to evaluate incidents, perform root cause analyses (RCAs), and determine when to escalate concerns to malpractice insurers. This role helps protect patients, staff, and the organization by identifying risks, preventing recurrence, and improving system-wide safety practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, analyze, triage, and adjudicate hospital safety event reports.
  • Perform Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) on serious safety events and document findings.
  • Evaluate and differentiate Serious Reportable Events (SREs); conduct RCS reviews.
  • Assess lawsuits and claims received by the department and determine when to notify malpractice insurers.
  • Filter and interpret detailed legal and incident documentation to support risk mitigation decisions.
  • Follow up with clinical and operational teams to ensure corrective actions and event closures.
  • Support a department of Risk Specialists responsible for safety events, claims review, and malpractice risk assessment.
  • Identify opportunities to mitigate future risks and enhance patient and staff safety.

Required Experience
  • Prior Risk Management experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Ability to interpret legal documents and clinical safety reports.
  • Knowledge of SREs, RCAs, and hospital operations.
  • Experience with malpractice risk assessment and insurer communication.

Nice-to-Have Experience
  • Master’s degree in Nursing (preferred but not required).
  • Clinical or operational experience in acute-care environments.

Required Skills
  • Risk mitigation and safety event evaluation
  • Root cause analysis (RCA) expertise
  • Strong ability to interpret legal, clinical, and claim documentation

Preferred Skills
  • Understanding of malpractice processes and insurance escalation
  • Familiarity with hospital safety systems and incident reporting tools
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to triage and manage high-volume safety event workflows

Additional Skills
  • Ability to work with a small team handling lawsuits and claims
  • Understanding of hospital workflows and risk prevention strategies
  • Strong follow-up, documentation accuracy, and ability to close events efficiently
