This position is responsible for accurately capturing and maintaining patient problem, procedures, demographics, employment, emergency contact, guarantor, and insurance information for patients admitted to the Emergency Department and for inpatient and outpatient services at Beloit Memorial Hospital. Individuals in this position establish hospital billing accounts to accurately charge for the services that are rendered. They also interact with many internal and external guests and are responsible for creating a positive first impression of the Beloit Health System.
- Responsible for arriving patient to Beloit Memorial Hospital.
- Gathers all necessary patient demographic and billing information from patients or family, then enters into the billing system accurately.
- Verifies patient insurance information and updates information for patients presenting as walk-ins and arrivals for scheduled appointments.
- Complete registration, verification, notification, and collection of patient financial responsibility for services when noted.
- Identifies patients without health insurance and provides information on financial assistance program, and has patient complete Patient Responsibility waiver form. Complete Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) Questionnaire accurately for each Medicare patient registration.
- Identify appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary payers, verifying eligibility.
- Helps coordinate placement of patients into the appropriate inpatient unit as requested by nursing unit.
- Responsible for documenting in the patient account notes if a patient has out-of-network insurance and any attempt to transfer patient to an in-network facility that was denied. Obtains signature on patient responsibility waiver form.
- Performs pre-admission or pre-service registration and/or check-in of patients for hospital surgical and ancillary services.
- Obtains signatures for Important Message for Medicare (IMM) forms as required for admission and gives patient a copy.
- Correctly identifies patients utilizing department policy.
- Generates patient arm band, face sheet, and patient labels.
- Organizes all current bedded patients and contacts the insurance companies via fax, phone, or on-line submission, documentation of authorization results, and works closely with case management.
- Attends to assigned work queues to resolve registration errors thus allowing patient bills to process in a timely manner.
- Responds to all incoming correspondence and telephone inquiries.
- Escorts patients/visitors to other areas as needed when coverage is available.
- Solves practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Promotes positive interactions with medical and clinical staff, patients, and visitors. Provides patients with information regarding hospital policy and procedures, directing patients to appropriate nursing or ancillary units as necessary.
- Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance to perform all essential duties within the scope of position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 3 years registration experience.
- Strong background in Medicare and Medicaid emergency services.
- Strong background in medical terminology.
- Experience in working directly with the public in a service industry is strongly preferred.
- Strong computer skills (including MS Word and Excel).
- Proficient typing skills.
- Ability to maintain accuracy while working on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment under low-to moderate supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including professional telephone etiquette.
- Ability to ensure confidentiality of sensitive information and maintain HIPAA compliance.
- Dependable in both production and attendance.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills.
- Maintain ethical conduct and keep confidential personal and medical information about patients.
- May participate in educational programs and continually seek for personal development.
- Reporting Relationship: Department Manager.
