The Senior R&D Manager in the Applicator Lab leads the daily operation of the laboratory and directly manages the Technical Engineering Team. This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of approximately 8 direct reports within the Applicator Team. The role has significant interaction with internal customers throughout the Sherwin Williams business.
Job duties include contact with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. This role is not remote/hybrid. This role will report to Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 6745 Miller Road, Brecksville, OH 44141.

Responsible for the following:
• Define the goals, roles, and responsibilities of the Applicators Team.
• Leading a team of engineers with technical expertise in Product Design, Applicators, and technology development.
• Primary sponsorship and management responsibility for Applicator NPD projects, including matrixed leadership of projects led by technical staff and project teams within the department that may not directly report to this position.
• Leadership of the Applicator CIP process (Continuous Improvement Projects) related to the commercialization process.
• Leadership of the 2 applicators R&D resources in Asia to ensure the proper project resource is coordinated between the team in USA and the support needed in moving the work forward.
• Partner with Marketing and Sourcing Team in managing complex domestic and international supply chain initiatives.
Leadership
• Sponsorship and management responsibility for all Applicator NPD projects, ensuring products are delivered on time and meet design profile requirements.
• Coordinate resources and project teams from Resource Pool to support MOB projects.
Employee and Team Development
• Grow and develop the Team professionally and technically by actively utilizing and engaging in Professional Development Plans with all employees
• Conduct formal performance reviews and address performance concerns.
• Effectively utilize delegation and stretch assignments to grow the Team’s Technical Leadership capacity.
• Facilitate open sharing of knowledge and ideas to promote employee engagement.
Communication
• Communicate/interface with Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain and Procurement, and other R&D departments and divisions.
• Ability to effectively communicate with external manufacturing partners and raw material suppliers.
• Written and verbal communication of team and project related info to key stakeholders and senior management.
Safety and Quality
• Ensure and reinforce Safety, Housekeeping, and ISO practices.
• Actively seek to improve overall safety through proper training and implementation of corrective actions as necessary.
• Continuous improvement of commercialization processes with a focus on balancing quality and speed to market.
BASIC QUALIFICATION:
• Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
• Must be at least 18 years of age
FORMAL EDUCATION:
Required:
• Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or other “STEM” field
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• Must have at least 5 years of supervisory experience (project management or people management) within R&D or Engineering
• Minimum of 5 years of engineering design, physical lab testing, laboratory paint formulation, or related fields
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team
Preferred:
• Experience in a commercialization R&D function
• Experience partnering with Marketing to commercialize products through Stage-Gate
• Experience leading or managing large project teams and/or complex projects
• Relevant experience working with Operations supporting new product launches or quality issues.
• Basic Understanding of CAD / Drawing & Specifications / Engineering Principles
TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
• Ability to understand complex supply chain and costing models
• Experience in a New Product Development Management software
Preferred:
• Basic understanding of Product Design software concepts
• Minitab
• Project Timeline Software (i.e., MSProject)
