Job Details

We are seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager with a strong background in the structural steel industry. The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of purchasing experience specifically related to structural steel materials, a proven ability to manage procurement processes efficiently, and the technical skill set required to support fast‑paced fabrication and construction operations.

This role requires the ability to read and interpret structural steel and erection drawings, negotiate effectively with suppliers, multitask in a dynamic environment, make independent decisions, and maintain accurate records. Strong relationship‑building skills and proactive problem‑solving are essential.

Purchasing Duties:

  • Re-Check drawings for listed finish and material grade noted
  • Check bolt list and increase quantity of all sized 5% and increase 6 each for field bolts
  • Complete a bolt stock check
  • Once Tekla list is returned purchase material coded as “P”
  • Email and/or call 3 vendors for pricing and availability
  • Issue PO # from “Purchase Order No Listing” spreadsheet on server
  • Check-mark the “P” on list once that size material has been purchased in full
  • Write purchase order # for bolts below the “P”
  • Quote and sales order acknowledgment must be checked for accuracy
  • Quote / Sales order acknowledgment with PO# written on top should be given to receptionist for entering into Foundation. Quotes not used should be given to Receptionist to enter onto Material Average Pricing spreadsheet on the server
  • Forward drawings, Tekla, and parts sheets to Project Coordinator
  • Order: confirm size is accurate with Project Manager; confirm quote has not changed with vendor

a. Grating / Decking
b. Aluminum Railing
c. Joist with required hardware

  • High Strength Bolts:

a. Work with detail manager to correct issue early
b. Provide a list of purchase availability deviations to Erectors at time of purchase
c. Require at time of order to minimize lot numbers.
d. If a bolt is over 5x’s its diameter, it would be easier to order hex-heads.
e. For every lot number, add 3 bolts for testing. On DSA jobs, add 6 bolts
f. Order bolts early enough to allow for Erector MTRs to prepare for bolt pre-installation testing and verification onsite

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of purchasing experience in the structural steel industry (required).
  • Proven ability to manage procurement processes efficiently and strategically.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel and erection drawings (required).
  • Strong negotiation skills with demonstrated success in cost and contract management.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and take independent action based on sound judgment and problem‑solving.
  • Excellent record‑keeping and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish productive, collaborative relationships with suppliers and internal teams.
  • Familiarity with industry‑common tools (e.g., Tekla, Bluebeam, Excel) is preferred.
