Position Summary:

A full-time Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Dorin Bogdan Borza at Meharry Medical College. The laboratory focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases affecting the kidneys and/or lungs, and how genetic variants contribute to health disparities in these diseases. The Fellow will work with the PI to investigate phenotypic consequences of loss-of-function genetic variants specifically occurring in African ancestry populations, as well as develop serologic immunoassays for novel autoantigens implicated in autoimmune kidney disease.

Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):
  • Independently perform research experiments under minimal supervision.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results, prepare figures, and draft manuscripts.
  • Assists the PI in the preparation of grant applications.
  • Engage in collaborative work with investigators from other labs at Meharry or other institutions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • A strong track record of productive research (including at least two first-author publications) is required.
  • Experience with basic biochemistry and molecular biology techniques (protein purification, SDS-PAGE, DNA/RNA isolation) is required
  • Experience with various immunoassays (ELISA, Western blot, immunoprecipitation, fluorescence microscopy) is required
  • Excellent command of English language (written and verbal) and demonstrated scientific writing skills (including but not limited to writing scientific papers and preparing grant applications) are required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:
  • Experience with software/bioinformatics tools for OMICS research is strongly preferred
  • Ability to independently learn how to operate sophisticated research equipment and software is highly desirable

Education and Experience Required:
  • A Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, or biomedical sciences is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of previous postdoctoral training experience
