Position Summary:
Perform duties to work under the guidance of a licensed Registered Pharmacist to prepare medications for patients, working within the limits of standard or accepted practice. Pharmacy technicians only perform packaging, manipulative, repetitive, or other nondiscretionary tasks while assisting and under the direct supervision and control of a pharmacist. The pharmacist is responsible for the duties performed by the pharmacy technician under the pharmacist's supervision. Decision-making is based on precedent and working within the limits of pharmacy law and established policy.
Essential Functions:
- Receive telephone refill authorization and physician's orders and enter data to the computer system's patient medication profile.
- Process and fill individual prescriptions for patients, working under the guidance of the Registered Pharmacist.
- Process online insurance claims and contact insurance companies or other payers as needed to ensure claims are payable to the pharmacy.
- Contact patients to coordinate deliveries of their medication and supplies.
- Assist with purchasing and receiving inventory, including medications, infusion supplies, equipment, and packing materials.
- Contribute to the periodic inventory process, counting and recording drugs and supplies on hand.
- Assist with the handling of infusion equipment, including infusion pumps, to ensure the safe delivery and return to and from patients.
Other Duties:
- Perform or assist with any operations as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements
- Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain a specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medications utilized for therapy in the defined disease states served by the pharmacy.
- Strong customer service and communication skills, including listening, speaking, and writing.
- Demonstrated accuracy in data entry and prescription preparation.
- Able to perform simple pharmacy calculations under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Pharmacy Technician Registration with California State Board of Pharmacy
- Sepecialty Pharmacy/Home Infusion experience preferred but not required
