Job Title: Parks Specialist II - Athletic Fields

Department: Recreation

Reports to: Superintendent of Parks and Planning

Job Class: Full Time, Non-Exempt, IMRF Eligible

Salary: $24 - $28 per hour DOQ

 

Position Summary:

Under the direction and Supervision of the Parks Foreman, the Park Specialist II - Athletic Fields is responsible for a variety of park maintenance, turf maintenance, horticulture, forestry, custodial and recreation support activities, with the main focus on Athletic Fields. The normal work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday, nights and weekends as needed. The Park Specialist II is on call as needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, prepares, and maintains park turf and athletic fields, which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Assisting with mowing and trimming of all athletic fields and other park turf, as needed, during the growing season, using tractors, hand mowers and trimmers.
    • Establishing and maintaining turf through scheduled seeding, fertilizing, weed control, sod laying aeration and irrigation requirements.
    • Applying herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides to destroy undesirable growth and pests.
    • Responsible for layout, striping and maintaining soccer, softball, football, lacrosse, and baseball fields.
    • Working collaboratively with the Recreation Department, specifically the Athletic Supervisor with layouts, schedules, workload, etc.
  • Cleans and maintains all park pavilions, restrooms, and other assigned buildings.
  • Maintains grounds through litter pickup, recycling, and other activities.
  • Responsible for, but not limited to, managing the safety and cleanliness of property and equipment by identifying, repairing and inspecting park facilities, equipment and property from wear, damage, vandalism, etc.
  • Maintains all Park District property, trails, paths, roads, parking lots, common sidewalks, and other surfaces, which includes, but is not limited to snow removal, debris removal, grading and light renovation.
  • Responsible for the operation and preventive maintenance of Park District vehicles, tractors, ground equipment, implements and ensuring it is performed and reported. The maintenance may include, but is not limited to daily inspections, washing, checking fluids and any other maintenance as needed.
  • Cross trains on all general areas of the Parks & Planning Department and assist in all areas needed.
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and directs multiple projects, labor and equipment needs.
  • Demonstrates, leads and supports the Park District's mission statement, vision and core values.
  • Establishes, supports, and maintains collaborative efforts with internal and external customers and organizations.
  • Maintain a pro-active approach to safety and risk management.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures as outlined in the safety manual and perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Addison Park District's safety program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Secondary Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • May be responsible for supervising part-time or seasonal staff by communicating job expectations, job training, coaching, performance evaluations, recognition, and discipline.
  • Assists in creating, updating, implementing, and managing an athletic field maintenance operation's manual.
  • Develops and manages the athletic field budget and expenses.
  • Responsible for all athletic field inventory, supplies and tools.
  • Assists in managing and completing the overall workload of the Parks and Planning Department in the area of Horticulture, which includes, but is not limited to planting trees, shrubs and flowers and their respective maintenance (i.e., watering, fertilizing, flower bed arrangement/maintenance, etc.) and other horticulture duties, as needed.
  • May assist in repairs damaged recreational items such as tennis court nets, basketball courts, soccer goals, playground equipment and shelters.
  • Documents work-hours and materials used on work orders to specific job requirements.
  • Receives quotes from vendors, such as, work to be performed, equipment repairs or purchases, etc. and the time required.
  • Attend workshops and seminars pertaining to employee's position, as needed, for new ideas, developments, and techniques.
  • May be required to work special events from time to time at nights and on weekends.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Preference given to candidates with an education in a related field such as turfgrass science and management, athletic turf management.
  • Minimum three years of experience in related field.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess a valid State of Illinois Pesticide Operator/Applicator License or must have ability to obtain within six (6) months of hiring.
  • Must be CPR and AED certified within six (6) months of hiring.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Position may be required to work both inside and outside during various environmental conditions, such as, but not limited to rain and mud, hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, fumes, dirt, and noise.
  • Frequent operation and handling of assigned equipment, which may include, but is not limited to athletic field equipment, tractors, general parks equipment, trucks and general maintenance equipment.
  • Must have the physical agility to maintain mobility from site to site and be able to perform moderate manual tasks (a thorough pre-employment physical examination will be required after conditional job offer.)
  • May perform duties which include, but are not limited to prolonged lifting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing for extended periods of time.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Use of arm and /or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than for medium work.
