ABCD operates two Alternative Education High Schools in partnership with the Boston Public Schools: the William J. Ostiguy High School and University High School. The William J. Ostiguy High School provides a safe and supportive school environment for youth who have committed to changing their relationship with drugs and alcohol. University High School is designed for students who are economically disadvantaged, struggling academically, or otherwise at risk in the traditional school system. Both schools provide the support needed for students to earn their high school diploma and pursue further education. Key Responsibilities


  • Assist teachers in providing an innovative, high-quality education program designed to meet the needs of the youth enrolled in ABCD Alternative Education High Schools. 
  • Work with the Director (Principal) and other school staff to create an educational environment in which quality and continuity are key factors in educating the student population.
  • Support direct instruction to children individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings
  • Help with classroom activities.
  •  Prepare instructional materials.
  • Assist in classroom setup and clean up.
  • Manage individual and classroom behavior, using prescribed approaches.
  • Supervise students on field trip activities.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the Director (Principal).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent and one to three of experience working with youth or young adults is required. 
  • Forty-eight (48) credit hours of college coursework and a passing score on one of the following is required:
    •  ParaPro Assessment
    • WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants
  • An Associate’s degree, Teacher Certificate, and/or a Social Work License is preferred.
  • Highly innovative, enthusiastic individual with keen problem-solving aptitude and attitude.
  • Strong verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility, initiative, and ability to work in a team required. 
  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Bilingual skill in Spanish or Haitian Creole is preferred but not required.
Expected Salary: $22.59 USD per hour. Salary scales are set according to an explicit compensation policy and relevant market data. Due to funding restrictions and our strong focus on internal parity, this salary is thoughtfully aligned with the duties expected for this role, and offers are firm.
