The candidate will provide legal assistance to H&R Block. Working at the direction of an attorney, the candidate will be responsible for reviewing and responding to subpoenas, summonses, garnishments, and other legal requests for information, in addition to assisting with case management, fact-gathering, and various other tasks relating to general litigation and employment law matters. This position requires considerable knowledge of legal terminology as well as good initiative, judgment, and follow-through.
Day to day, you’ll…
- Work at the direction of an attorney to review and respond to subpoenas, summonses, garnishments, and other legal requests for information
- Work at the direction of an attorney to assist with case management, fact-gathering, and various other tasks
- Track physical and electronic requests for information and provide status updates as needed
- Assist in creating, modifying, and maintaining document response procedures
- Prepare various legal reports and updates
- Effectively correspond with internal clients and counsel, outside counsel, requesting counsel, agencies, debtors, and others
- Assist with department administrative functions as necessary
- File and scan documents as required
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s Degree or completion of paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program, or other relevant combination of education and experience
- At least two years of experience as a paralegal
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills
- Knowledgeable in general principles of law, especially in the areas of civil procedure, litigation, or employment law
- Proven ability to take on substantive work with limited supervision and to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment with strict target dates
- Experience using and searching electronic document management systems, databases, and other legal or corporate applications
- Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Understanding and previous use of a Windows-based computer system with proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint
- Experience in a corporate legal department or law firm
- Experience reviewing and responding to subpoenas or other legal requests for information
