The primary function of this position consists of managing the safe, secure, compliant transfer (i.e., coordinating, scheduling, and transporting) of up to Hazard Category 2 and 3 levels of nuclear and/or hazardous material throughout the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) site and off-site. The candidate must be able to follow procedures and transportation documents related to the nuclear and hazardous material packaging and transportation programs. This position requires compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs), Department of Energy (DOE), and institutional policy/procedures. Will contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures and transportation documents relating to the nuclear material transportation compliance program.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Must have demonstrated performance in accomplishing work safely, securely, being environmental conscience with due regard for quality.
- Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local hazardous materials standards and regulations (i.e., 49 CFR DOT and FMCSR requirements).
- Strong knowledge and experience in hazardous materials and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation.
- Must be able to work to procedures affecting nuclear and hazardous material transportation.
- Must be able to work under limited direction and as a team member under tight schedules.
- Must have demonstrated good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to problems.
- Strong working knowledge of load tie-down procedures.
- Proven ability to successfully establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and/or external customers.
Training/Certifications:
- Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with hazardous materials endorsement.
- Must successfully complete the 49 CFR Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) training and pass the On-the-Job (OJT) test requirements to be qualified and authorized to perform the Transportation Specialist 3 job functions.
Education/Experience: Position requires a relevant Associate's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

- Working knowledge of the Laboratory's conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is one year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
