Job Summary and Qualifications
Expected to be able to function within the laboratory department, performing duties of processing specimens, clerical duties, ordering tests, stocking supplies, assisting with waived test as needed, phlebotomy, send out testing, and general test order entry. Must be aware of all policies and procedures performed within the laboratory department and be knowledgeable of all the lab modules within the Laboratory Information System (L.I.S.).
What you will do in this role:
- Able to function in any department unsupervised, performs computer entries, filing, telephone communications, and other clerical duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates good telephone etiquette and be able to greet patients and other visitors in a polite friendly manner
- Possess good communication skills and good clerical skills.
- Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory, and orders tests as needed.
- Results send outs test completed at reference laboratory into Laboratory Information System accurately. Less than 2 date errors per year allowed.
- Accurately enters specimen information into computer. Medical record number, name, date and time must be verified with requisition. Less than 2 date errors per year. No medical record number or name errors are permitted.
- Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all ages from newborn to geriatric in a safe, accurate, and timely manner.
- Demonstrates a good working knowledge of phlebotomy, and equipment used in collecting all specimens from newborns to geriatrics.
- Processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, and Histology specimens. Capable of placing samples on instruments in accordance with laboratory established policies.
- Processes specimens for any reference laboratory, and capable of sending out blocks/slides/reports to outside entities; examples (law offices, reference laboratories for path consults)
- Prepares tissues, slides, and reagents for use in Histology staining techniques.
- Capable of programing tissue processor.
- Stains and cover slips slides for presentation to testing personnel, and or pathologists.
- Keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean.
- Files and retrieve reports as necessary.
- Assists Supervisors with the training of Phlebotomist, and newly hired Lab Assistants.
- Capable of ordering supplies for the areas assigned.
- Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
What qualifications you will need:
- Associate degree in either a laboratory science, or biomedical degree.
- Prefer candidates that can be qualified under CLIA guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technician (non-certified status) but not required.
- Familiarity with laboratory procedures and specifically, policies and procedures performed.
- The Laboratory Assistant will follow the guidelines set by CLIA 88’, Subpart A – General Provisions, Section 493.15. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may perform only those tests granted waived status.
- Should have a working knowledge of medical terminology.
