TheAFL-CIO’scommunicationsteamcarriesthevoiceofAmerica’sunionstothemedia, tothe leaders and to the general public through various communications outlets.
The National Press Secretary and Senior Writer will serve simultaneously on the press and speechwriting teams, preparing news releases, statements, op-eds, officer speeches, and more. Theywillalso serveasthecommunications leadontheAFL-CIO’s broadcivilrightsportfolio.
TheNationalPressSecretaryand SeniorWriterissupervised bythe DirectorofMedia Relations.
DESCRIPTIONOFDUTIES:
· Writenewsreleases,backgroundpieces,advisories,op-eds,fact sheetsandothernews- related materials.
· Pitchproactivepress, inadditiontopitchingprinciples,subject matterexperts,and surrogates for TV, print, and radio.
· Serveasthepressleadoncivilrights,women’seconomicagenda,reproductiverights, immigration, LGBTQ issues and more.
· ServesastheCommunicationsliaisontotheAFL-CIOCivil,Human&Women’sRights Director, AFL-CIO constituency groups and the AFL-CIO Racial Justice Task Force.
· Leadstheworkwithinternationalmediaoutletsandlabororganizationsto highlightthe AFL-CIO’S commitment to human rights.
· CoordinateswiththeAFL-CIOofficers,seniorstaff,affiliates,media,coalitionpartners and the public (locally and internationally).
· Providesmediasupportforthelocalandnationalstrategiccampaignsas needed.
· Conductsmediatrainingwithunionactivistsandleaders.
· Works withaffiliate, state federationand locallaborbodycommunicatorsto plan media events,coordinateconsistent messagedelivery,andprovidecommunicationssupportfor portfolio activities.
· Workswithcommunicatorsatalliedorganizationsonmediaandcommunications strategy around joint efforts and initiatives.
· Createtalkingpoints,messagingguides, factsheets,andothertoolsandmaterials.
· Keepsthedirectorfullyinformedonaregularbasisonissuesaffectingyour portfolio.
· Performotherdutiesasassigned.
QUALIFICATIONSANDSKILLS:
· Minimum7yearsofexperience workinginmediarelations, journalism, orexecutive communications, with a focus on civil, human and women’s rights.
· Bachelor’sdegreeinrelatedfieldorequivalent experiencewithspecificdemonstrated experience in civil, human and women’s rights issues;
· Demonstratedexperienceworkingwithcommunitiesofcolor,womenandtheLGBTQ community;
· Demonstratedextensiveknowledgeofissuesincludingracialjustice,genderequity, voting rights, employee non-discrimination, equalpay, working families, and other issues relevant to current civil, human and women’s rights issues;
· Demonstratedabilitytoplan, problemsolveandthinkcreativelyand strategically;
· Demonstratedexperienceworkingsuccessfullyinpoliticallysensitiveandhigh pressured environments;
· Astrongunderstandingofthe labormovement,theAFL-CIOandeconomicandsocial justice issues.
· Excellentverbalandwrittenskills.
· Strong interpersonalskills.
· Abilitytowork independently,aswellaspart ofateam.
· Demonstratedsuperiorwritingskillsincludingexperiencewritingop-eds,pressreleases, fact sheets and other media-related materials.
· Flexibilitytotravelasrequiredinperformance ofduties.
· Abilitytoworklongandextendedhours.
