Job Description:

The mental health counselor helps students who use the Counseling Center services to cope more effectively with personal, emotional, and situational barriers to learning; improve students' adjustment to unavoidable stress; and contribute to their personal growth by providing counseling and related services. The mental health counselor helps campus partners respond to the mental health challenges of students through outreach and training initiatives. 

Specific responsibility include but are not limited to:

  1. Assessment and treatment of clinical disorders, counseling for grief, trauma and developmental concerns such as: identity issues; adjustment to college; healthy relationships; stress management; behavioral changes, academic counseling and skills building.
  2. Coordinating care and related client follow-up with medical professionals, mental health professionals, family, and other support structures.
  3. Suicide risk assessment. Assess the seriousness of students in crisis and facilitate the appropriate support and follow-up. 
  4. Leadership roles and service on various campus committees.
  5. Psycho-educational outreach programs.
  6. Consultation with faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members. 
  7. Provide training for Community Living staff, orientation leaders and others as determined by the director.
  8. Participate in new student orientation
  9. Other service/outreach as assigned by the director.

 


Requirements:

  1. Master's or doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, clinical psychology, social work, mental health counseling required. 
  2. NYS license to practice independently in the field of mental health. LCSW, LMHC-D or Licensed Psychologist strongly preferred. Consideration given to LMHC with eligibility for diagnostic privilege.  
  3. A minimum of 3 years clinical experience.
  4. Ability to share in on call crisis rotation. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  6. Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work well in a team atmosphere..  

 


Additional Information:

This is an 11-month position, working from August 1st through June 30th.

Annual Salary: $59,410
