- Time Zone: EST
- Schedule: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM, Monday–Friday
- Includes rotational weekends and holidays
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Traveler performs high-complexity laboratory testing while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. This role supports patient care by analyzing specimens, reviewing and releasing test results, and maintaining rigorous documentation and quality control practices in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory policies.
This position is ideal for a traveler with strong technical expertise, adaptability, and a commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, and reporting.
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures in accordance with department SOPs.
- Review, verify, and release patient test results.
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing is handled the same as patient specimens.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and all laboratory safety and quality guidelines.
- Document quality control activities, calibrations, maintenance, and corrective actions.
- Identify and resolve testing issues or escalate to senior technologists or supervisors as needed.
- Report STAT and critical results in accordance with department procedures.
- Maintain complete, accurate records of all on-site testing performed.
- Ensure reagents and test kits are properly labeled with received, opened, and expiration dates.
- Participate in training, competency reviews, department meetings, and safety sessions.
- Support inspections by regulatory or government agencies as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional laboratory environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Solid understanding of clinical laboratory testing across all lab areas.
- Knowledge of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) practices.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems and multiple computer platforms.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple procedures simultaneously.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Commitment to patient confidentiality at all times.
Education & Certification
Education
One of the following:
- BS in Medical Technology (preferred), or
- BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or
- Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or
- Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433
Foreign-educated candidates:
- Must provide credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation)
U.S.-educated candidates:
- Must provide original official transcripts
Certification / Licensure
- National certification MT or MLT from ASCP or AMT (required or eligible)
- State licensure as required
Work Experience
- 1+ year of clinical laboratory experience preferred
- Minimum 1 year of high-complexity testing experience required for candidates with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology
Work Environment
- Overnight laboratory environment with prolonged standing and walking
- Use of PPE as required
- Frequent computer use and documentation
- Participation in rotational weekends and holidays
- Interaction with multiple departments and, when needed, clients
