Medical Lab Scientist in the External Referral Lab. Primarily Monday - Friday, 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Rotating weekend and holiday on-call hours. 

This position is eligible for a $5,000 commitment bonus and the second-shift differential. 

General Description

Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specialization. Tasks are performed according to written procedures and policies with careful monitoring of quality control and quality assurance practices.

 

Work Performed

  • Investigate issues and provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting of external reference laboratory test ordering, required forms, and specimen handling, shipping, and reporting results. 
  • Act as the person in charge (PIC) as well as a resource person /role model.
  • Coordinate and participate in the processing and interpretation of complex technical duties in support of medical laboratory testing.
  • Interact and is a liaison with physicians and other health care providers and professionals to provide needed information regarding test requirements, performance, result reporting and billing.  Coordinates special collection procedures and transportation of specimens for esoteric tests.
  • Participate in decisions regarding current work flow process changes and new workflow process development and implementation.
  • Help coordinate participation for lab inspections and work with inspectors.
  • Monitor Quality Assurance, Safety, and Infection Control practices to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Research external reference laboratories that perform requested esoteric tests.
  • Handle all Send out Tests for the Duke Health System including DUH, DRH, and DRAH.
  • Processing and shipment of Referral Lab blood, body fluid, non-fixed tissue, urine and feces for tests not performed by a Duke performing lab.
  • Responsible for day to day follow up and resolution of escalated pre and post analytical issues and questions for the Referral Lab.
  • Resolve Beaker reports:   Specimen collected not received and expected test list
  • Assist in training new personnel; provide technical assistance to new employees, students as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology required. Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
