In support of our client, a heavy industrial manufacturer, we are seeking a senior-level Mechanical Process Engineer to join their plant engineering team in Maryville, MO. This is a long-term contract opportunity with an expected duration of 6+ months with the possibility of extension at their other manufacturing facilities in the central United States.
Our client currently operates an active pyrolysis plant and has two additional pyrolysis plants in various stages of completion. This role will support plant engineering, operations, and continuous improvement initiatives across the facility, while also contributing to ongoing plant expansion efforts. This position requires a hands-on engineer with strong mechanical and process experience in heavy industrial or chemical manufacturing environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluate and improve existing plant processes, workflows, and mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations
- Serve as a responsible engineer for critical Process Safety Management (PSM) functions, including Management of Change (MoC), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), P&ID redlines and as-built updates, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
- Provide engineering support for pyrolysis reactors, oil recovery systems, carbon finishing systems, and associated process equipment
- Ensure proper implementation of OEM guidelines to maintain equipment reliability and operability
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives based on plant KPIs, operational data, and performance metrics
- Develop and implement process and mechanical improvements to enhance productivity, safety, and efficiency
- Support capital projects including equipment specification, design review, installation, commissioning, and startup
- Monitor plant performance and identify opportunities for optimization and cost reduction
- Develop technical reports documenting process performance, engineering changes, and improvement initiatives
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with plant safety, environmental, and quality standards
- Provide hands-on troubleshooting and technical support for rotating and fixed mechanical equipment
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and project teams to ensure successful implementation of engineering solutions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related engineering discipline
- Minimum 15 years of engineering experience in heavy industrial, chemical, petrochemical, or similar process manufacturing environments
- Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude and experience supporting operating industrial facilities
- Experience supporting Process Safety Management programs, including MoC and Root Cause Analysis
- Strong knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics
- Hands-on experience with process equipment including heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, blowers, control valves, reactors, and solids handling systems
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, engineering drawings, and equipment specifications
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with plant teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in pyrolysis, gasification, carbon black, petrochemical, refining, or similar thermal process industries
- Experience supporting plant expansions, capital projects, and commissioning activities
- Familiarity with process simulation tools
- Exposure to instrumentation and control systems
