Status: Full-time Professional
Annual Salary Range: $66,800 - $126,280
*Salary and grade commensurate with education and experience.
Job Summary
As a Materials/Metallurgical Engineer at BPMI, you will work under significant to limited supervision and perform routine to moderately complex critical technical functions to execute the BPMI mission in areas including but not limited to chemical or materials engineering evaluations and analyses, design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, and analysis/auditing of vendor's procedures and systems for quality control or manufacturing surveillance. Work may include independent assessments or participating on multi-disciplinary teams, research and development, and on-site supplier assessments.
This position requires knowledge and application of materials engineering techniques, principles, and practices employed in the area of assignment. You will be responsible to maintain the technical excellence of BPMI within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
Essential Duties:
- Understand project requirements, track progress against schedule and performance goals, and provide regular status updates to management and the design team.
- Assist with the preparation of material and process instructions, standards, manuals, and specifications. Provide input to the preparations, follow, and reporting of material development programs.
- Assist with materials engineering oversight of supplier manufacturing processing and fabrication procedures.
- Perform failure analysis on metal components to identify root causes, suggest improvements and develop solutions to prevent future issues.
- Team with other engineers performing related phases of the technical work to ensure integration of activities and plans.
- Prepare revisions to technical manuals, reports, or procedures in accordance with NR Program quality standards.
- Conduct production reviews and quality surveillance; review and approve supplier designs and supporting technical reports on assigned components and equipment; develop and implement methods to improve supplier performance.
- Contribute to design for affordability reviews and prepare cost estimates; perform analyses and evaluations of supplier designs for material suitability, reliability, and integrity.
- Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions, or obtaining approval of funding.
- Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Stay current with advancements in the field of metallurgy and materials science. Understand advanced analytical tools and equipment.

Minimum Job Requirements:
- B.S. in Materials Science or Metallurgical Engineering or B.S. degree in another engineering discipline with a M.S. in Materials or Metallurgical Engineer from an accredited college or university.
- Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
Preferred Job Requirements:
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 is preferred for recent college graduates.
- Experience in the application of materials and processes in the design and fabrication of equipment.
- Ability to prepare and interpret specifications and standards for metallic and nonmetallic materials and processes, and the metallurgy of materials to fabricate plant equipment or pressure vessels is desirable.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and other commonly used business applications.
