Job Summary and Qualifications
Provide direction and administration of the Spiritual Care Department through management of chaplains in the provision of spiritual care services for patients, families, and staff, supports clinical ethics needs and oversight of volunteer program.
- Integrate department services with the hospital’s primary functions.
- Coordinate and integrate services within own department and with other departments.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of spiritual care services.
- Recommend a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide spiritual care.
- Determine the qualifications and competency of department personnel who provide patient care services.
- Continuously assess and improve the department’s performance.
- Maintain appropriate quality control programs.
- Provide for orientation, in-service, training, and continuing education of all persons in the department.
- Recommend space and other resources needed by the department.
- Responds (or directs chaplain) to referrals in a timely and prompt manner.
- Assesses (or directs chaplain) clinical units daily for spiritual care needs.
- Provides direct spiritual care to patients, families and staff in accordance with departmental standards.
- Makes appropriate referrals to other departments and community agencies in accordance with Spiritual Care standards.
- Documents patient interactions in medical record.
- Crisis Intervention Responds (or directs chaplain) to STAT calls immediately.
- Responds (or directs chaplain) to Dr. Leo calls within five minutes.
- Follows Spiritual Care Procedures for crisis intervention and support.
- Documents services as appropriate.
- Responds (or directs chaplain) to pager calls within five minutes.
- Maintains chaplain availability for after hour pager calls.
- Administration Co-chairs the Bioethics Committee; serves other committees as requested. Maintains membership in appropriate accrediting organizations.
- Maintains knowledge of referral resources.
- Maintains availability via pager daily.
- Serves as primary representative of Spiritual Care Department to hospital Leadership.
- Establishes written annual objectives and associated plans, which are compatible with the organization’s goals.
- Prepares annual budget for Spiritual Care Department following established hospital procedure, and monitors department budget.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Communication Responds (or directs chaplain) to interdisciplinary referrals within the same day.
- Attends (or directs chaplain) regular interdisciplinary team meetings (ITMs)
- Interprets appropriate spiritual care information to others.
- Maintains effective working relationships with hospital and other healthcare providers and community.
- Provides in-services to hospital departments regarding spiritual care, clinical ethics, and patient rights issues.
- Staff Chaplain and PRN Chaplain Management
- Selects competent, qualified chaplains based on professional spiritual care standards and the peer interviewing process.
- Assures compliance with mandatory education requirements.
- Meets regularly with department members, compiles on call schedule (in cooperation with PRN chaplains), and tends to payroll processes.
- Completes 30 & 90 day and annual evaluations in a timely manner.
- Handles departmental concerns and issues as they arise.
- Direction and oversight of Volunteer Services Department Oversee recruitment, interview, and orientation processes of new volunteers.
- Oversee training and placement of volunteers (including junior volunteers) throughout the hospital.
- Oversee annual in-service training and compliance with hospital policies and procedures for volunteers.
- In conjunction with Volunteer Auxiliary officers and committees plan banquets, meetings, and other events.
- Attend Volunteer Executive Board meetings, Captains’ meetings, and annual nominating meeting.
- Provide support and guidance to volunteer processes.
What qualifications you will need:
- Bachelors Degree Master of Divinity (or equivalent) from an accredited theological seminary
- 1 year (4 units) Clinical Pastoral Education residency from an accredited CPE facility.
- Board certification with Association of Professional Chaplains (or other professional chaplain certifying agency).
- Requires a minimum of 5 years experience in spiritual care, and 3 years administrative responsibilities.
- (Preferred) experience as department lead.
- Must evidence complete understanding of conceptual and interpersonal skills in the field of spiritual care and have demonstrated competence in the role of chaplain.
- Must possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal), and ability to deal with diverse groups of people, including all age groups.
