This role requires a valid driver's license. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.

Must be able to obtain a Class "A" CDL with Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment.

Must reside within a 30-minute response time from the Public Works Facility, employee will have (6) months from employment date in which to relocate. Will be subject to covering/handling first-call or back-up call when assigned.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Assist in performing a variety of specialized maintenance work in assigned area of responsibility. Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repairs a variety of concrete, signs, grounds, and/or other related items in assigned area of responsibility. Assists with the performance of the preventative maintenance of equipment. Operate and maintain a variety of hand and/or power tools in assigned area of responsibility. Assist with the completion of a variety of logs, documents, and/or simple reports regarding quantity of materials handled, equipment operations, and/or other related information. Observe safe work methods and uses safety equipment. Secure work sites from hazards as needed. Under direct supervision sets up traffic warning devices and barricades and directs traffic around work sites. Assist with the preparation and cleans up work sites. Participates in/on a variety of meetings and training sessions. Respond to emergency operations and on-call situations. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assist in performing a wide variety of activities in support of streets maintenance, which includes: implementing temporary and permanent asphalt repair to streets, alleys, sidewalks, and/or other applicable areas; pouring concrete; and/or, performing other related activities. Duties also include: patches potholes as temporary or permanent solutions; levels concrete and asphalt streets and/or sidewalks to resolve uneven areas or dips; assists with base failure repairs; assists with the overlaying of streets. May be responsible for responding to and assisting during emergency situations (e.g., tornadoes, floods, icing, snow, traffic accidents, and chemical spills).

Duties are included as follows:
  • Pours, spreads and levels concrete; sets forms, ties steel, wrecks forms, backfills, places, spreads and compacts hot mix: lays sod; uses various concrete finishing tools; assists with performing weekly maintenance on equipment, such as oil, fluid, grease, and clean; bores holes in existing concrete to install rebar; repairs sprinkler systems damaged by crews; cleans up work site, materials and unused concrete; clean tools of concrete; hauls old spoils to designated dump site; watches for buried utility lines during excavation; sands icy roads in the winter; hauls materials with dump truck; lifts and carries objects such as cement bags, small equipment, tampers, water pumps, and jackhammer weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Assists with performing a wide variety of activities in support of drainage maintenance, which includes: repairing inlet boxes, storm pipes, flumes, head walls, culverts, and bar ditches; grading alleys; pressure washing screening walls for painting; installing and repairing guardrails and dome posts; maintaining bridges for structural integrity; and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED preferred. No experience required; related maintenance and/or construction experience preferred.
  • Ability to read traffic signs, warning labels and simple operating instructions desired.
  • Ability to write work orders for repair of equipment, memos, and complete time sheet desired.
  • Ability to perform simple math, i.e. completion of time sheet, mix chemicals and solutions.
  • Initiative and ability to foresee problematic conditions or safety risks in Streets and to take corrective action.
  • Ability to work well with department staff as well as all other departments.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand, walk on uneven terrain, asphalt, concrete, water, mud, rock, and frequently work in mud which may be knee deep. Ability to lift tools and equipment which may weigh up to 150 pounds. This job requires reaching, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, climbing and balance in order to use equipment, elevate work site, etc. May be required to operate foot controls on heavy equipment such as backhoe and other machinery. Exposed to extremes in outdoor temperature, inclement weather, fumes and trenching during water operations.
