Machine Shop Supervisor

About the role:

The Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for leading day-to-day machine shop operations to meet production demands, quality standards, and delivery commitments. This role sets priorities, supports execution, and ensures work is completed efficiently and safely. The position oversees the machining of production parts, prototypes, and tooling in a low-volume, tight-tolerance environment. It requires strong technical expertise across CNC and manual machining, including Swiss lathe operations and CNC programming, to guide work, support troubleshooting, and ensure quality outcomes. This role is accountable for production output, quality, and on-time delivery within the machine shop, while supporting team development and driving continuous improvement in shop floor processes and performance.

Key Responsibilities:

+ Lead daily machine shop operations and execution of production schedules to meet quality and delivery expectations + Establish priorities, allocate resources, and manage workflow based on production needs and business impact + Provide technical leadership across machining operations, including CNC programming, setup, and process optimization + Ensure machining activities meet specifications, tolerances, and quality requirements + Determine appropriate tooling, materials, and machining methods to support production requirements + Monitor machining performance and process conditions to ensure efficiency and quality + Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures + Own production performance, capacity, and output, including scrap and rework, and drive corrective actions as needed + Lead, coach, and hold machinists accountable for performance, quality, safety, and execution + Plan and adjust staffing and workload to meet production demand + Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including production flow, standard work, and shop floor processes + Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, and Quality to support production, tooling, process improvements, and job estimation + Support design and development of fixtures, tooling, and prototype components + Support hands-on machining activities as needed, including setup, operation, and finishing processes + Ensure availability of tools, materials, and resources required to support production + Manage timecards and support performance management, addressing concerns as needed + Ensure effective implementation of engineering changes (ECOs) and escalate quality or equipment issues as appropriate

Education & Experience:

+ High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in machining, manufacturing, or a related field preferred + 10+ years of machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment, including both CNC and manual machining + 5+ years of experience leading machinists or production teams in a manufacturing environment + Demonstrated experience programming CNC machines using MasterCam + Strong experience operating and supporting CNC mills, lathes, Swiss lathe machine centers, and manual machining equipment + Experience working in a low-volume, tight-tolerance manufacturing environment + Demonstrated experience driving process improvements, establishing standard work, and supporting shop floor performance

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

+ Strong knowledge of machining principles, tooling, materials, and precision manufacturing processes + Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and process documentation + Proficiency in precision measurement tools and inspection techniques + Solid understanding of machining math, including geometry and trigonometry + Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve machining and process issues + Ability to lead, prioritize work, and hold team members accountable for performance, quality, and safety + Ability to manage multiple priorities and make decisions in a fast-paced production environment + Effective communication skills across operators, engineers, and cross-functional teams + Basic computer skills to support reporting, documentation, and communication + Understanding of machine shop maintenance, organization, and housekeeping practices

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

+ Work is performed in a machine shop environment with regular exposure to operating machinery, including CNC mills, lathes, Swiss lathes, and manual machining equipment + Exposure to moving mechanical parts, rotating equipment, sharp cutting tools, metal shavings, noise, and vibration + Regular exposure to oils, coolants, dust, and other machining-related materials + Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and other equipment as applicable + Frequent standing, walking, and working in close proximity to operating machines + Frequent use of hands for handling tools, materials, gauges, and equipment + Ability to safely lift, move, and position materials and components as required + Requires strong situational awareness and adherence to safety procedures to prevent injury to self and others Are you ready to join a different kind of company where our people, our culture, and our commitments are centered around providing trusted solutions that improve lives around the world?

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $69,200.00 - $103,800.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
