A well-established, multi-office law firm is seeking a Litigation Associate Attorney to join its Professional Liability / Insurance Coverage practice in Chicago. This role is ideal for an associate with 2–5 years of insurance coverage and litigation experience who wants meaningful responsibility, client exposure, and strong mentorship in a collaborative environment.

The practice handles complex, high-value insurance coverage matters for major insurers and corporate clients, including declaratory judgment actions and bad faith disputes, in both state and federal courts. This position is not insurance defense.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Litigation Associate Attorney specializing in Insurance Coverage and Professional Liability. This dynamic role offers an opportunity to work on complex and high-stakes litigation cases, providing crucial legal advice to clients in the insurance industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling all aspects of litigation, from initial assessment through trial and appeal. This role requires a deep understanding of insurance coverage and professional liability law, with a specific focus on bad faith claims, reservation of rights, and coverage litigation.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with litigated general and professional liability insurance coverage and bad faith matters
  • Analyze coverage issues and draft coverage opinions and position correspondence
  • Prepare pleadings, discovery, and motions in state and federal court
  • Participate in depositions, mediations, hearings, and court appearances, including trial support
  • Communicate directly with clients and prepare status reports and analyses
  • Contribute to case strategy and execution on complex and contentious matters
  • Collaborate with attorneys across practice groups and offices as needed

Qualifications:

1. Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
2. Admitted to practice law in the state of IL and in good standing with the state bar.
3. 2–5 years of law firm experience handling insurance coverage and litigation matters
4. Demonstrated experience with insurance coverage (both litigated and non-litigated)
5. Familiarity with state and/or federal litigation procedures
6. Prior experience in a billable-hours environment (1800 billable hour expectation)
7. Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
8. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
9. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage matters independently
10. Team-oriented, driven, and eager to continue developing professionally
