The Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the other teaching staff in the care, supervision, health and safety of children in one specific age group or multi-age groupings. Performs duties as planned in co-operation with the Lead Teacher or Teacher in charge, in accordance to the guidelines and standards of AZ Dept of Health Services (ADHS), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and the Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Co-ordinates with the Lead Teacher or Teacher in the care, organization and cleanliness of the indoor/outdoor equipment and materials.
Essential Functions
- Assists in the development of age-appropriate curriculum. Participates in co-operation with the other teaching staff in providing input for planning and implementing a curriculum that meets the criteria of National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as demonstrated by observation and documentation. Plans and maintains schedules and routines.
- Assists in providing a safe, stimulating physical environment. Coordinates with all staff to meet center goals to keep the environment safe, clean, healthy and organized per Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) guidelines as demonstrated by observation and feedback. Participate in the maintenance and arrangement of all classroom and playground equipment and materials as demonstrated by documentation and observation.
- Maintains communication with parents, children, and staff. After consultation with the lead teacher and or coordinator parents will be consulted about their children’s needs and careful follow through will occur in a timely manner. Parents and children will be acknowledged and assisted during drop off and pick-up time. All relevant information will be communicated to parents through children's daily logs. Information will be communicated to classroom staff through the classroom journal. Listens attentively to children, clearly responds to their questions and requests. Encourages children of all ages to use language by clearly repeating their sounds, asking open ended questions, and providing opportunities for positive interaction and dialogue throughout their day.
- Practices appropriate guidance and discipline techniques as outlined by ADHS and NAEYC. Age appropriate guidance is used for each group assigned. Respect and caring for each child is demonstrated at all times. Assists in ensuring that attendance rosters, flash counts are maintained as required from the beginning to the end of the day and submitted to the coordinator. Assists in ensuring that all staff is made aware of the needs of children who require special care including those with individual education plans (IEPs) and medical needs.
- Communicates clearly and tactfully, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, parents and other customers.
- Seeks assistance from in charge staff such as Lead Teacher or Coordinator to proof read written communication before sending it home to parents, etc.

- High School Diploma or GED - Required
- 6 months experience working with children - Required
- 6 months experience working with children in a licensed childcare facility - Preferred

- Current Child Care First Aid within 1 week of date of hire into position 7 Days - Required

- Other For those Assistant Teacher positions that will be required to drive HonorHealth vehicles, incumbent must have a clean driving record as defined by HonorHealth Network Driver Qualification Policy Q-359 (available upon request) and meet the following: 1) Must Be at least 21 years of age 2) Provide a current and valid Arizona driver's license 3) Have a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from the Department of Motor Vehicles obtained and reviewed by Human Resources 4) Successfully complete the next available, quarterly conducted, in-house training HonorHealth Defensive Driving Course and provide a certificate of completion. - Required
