Position Title: Fabrication Specialist B
Work Location: Michoud Assembly Facility – New Orleans, LA (Building 66-103)
Pay Rate: $38/hr (W2)
Duration: 12 Months (Possible Extension)
Shifts:
1st Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
2nd Shift: 2:30 PM – 10:30 PM
Work Arrangement: 100% Onsite
Travel: Up to 10% domestic travel (possible to Kennedy Space Center or Stennis Space Center)
Clearance: NASA Public Trust level background check required
Position Summary
We are seeking skilled Fabrication Specialists to perform a wide variety of manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication tasks for precision mechanical, electro-mechanical, and avionics components. This role operates in FOD-sensitive and Controlled Work Areas (CWA), requiring strong attention to detail, safety protocols, and the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD models.
Key Responsibilities
Set up and operate machinery, perform welding, sheet metal fabrication, extrusion, tube bending, and composite Client-up.
Assemble, repair, modify, and install mechanical and electro-mechanical components, power plants, and drive trains.
Perform soldering, crimping, and wiring on electronic and avionics products.
Assemble and install wire harnesses and avionics products.
Fabricate structural, mechanical, and electrical components from 2D drawings and 3D CAD models.
Prepare test articles, fixtures, and data collection devices for various testing scenarios.
Apply organic coatings for corrosion protection and appearance requirements.
Build and validate prototypes, conduct fit checks, functional testing, and troubleshoot to meet design intent.
Maintain part and process documentation, follow quality and safety procedures, and log assembly/test results.
Work with and install sensitive electronic devices and avionics sensors (accelerometers, strain gauges, etc.).
Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and project leads to resolve design or manufacturability issues.
Required Skills
Mechanical Aptitude: Strong hands-on skills with tools, fixtures, and mechanical systems; capable of precise measurements and troubleshooting.
CAD Literacy: Able to read and interpret 2D engineering drawings and 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).
Relevant Experience: Background in automotive, aerospace, or military mechanical/electrical systems in a FOD-sensitive environment.
Preferred Skills
Military Background: Knowledge of military standards/procedures and experience in structured, safety-critical environments.
Fabrication Expertise: 3+ years in fabrication or assembly, including soldering, riveting, welding, or sheet metal work.
Team Collaboration: Strong communication skills and proven success in cross-functional, fast-paced environments.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
Typically 1+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of on-the-job or formal classroom training is required.
Must comply with all safety, quality, and operational procedures within FOD-sensitive and CWA environments.
Must pass NASA Public Trust background check prior to start.
